Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has confirmed the death of Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, who passed away at the age of 57 due to an undisclosed illness while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital on Sunday, February 16.
Cheptumo’s passing has left a significant void in both Kenyan politics and public service. Cheptumo's political career was characterized by his steadfast commitment to his constituents. A graduate of the University of Nairobi, he earned his law degree in 1991 and founded his own legal practice, Cheptumo and Company Advocates, in 1998. He actively led the firm until 2007, earning respect within the legal community.
His political journey began as the Baringo North Member of Parliament, a role he held for 14 years. Throughout his tenure, he became known as a diligent and effective leader, advocating for the needs of his constituency. In the 2022 General Elections, Cheptumo achieved a landmark victory by securing the Baringo County Senate seat, defeating Gideon Moi with 141,777 votes to Moi's 71,408.
This victory was significant as it marked the end of Moi's longstanding influence in the region. The news of the senator's death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from various sectors. President William Ruto has commended Cheptumo's legacy, describing him as a progressive leader devoted to public service.
Senator William Cheptumo was a progressive leader who was dedicated to public service. He was vocal, hardworking, and a tireless champion for the transformation of Baringo," says President Ruto.
Despite this uncertainty, his legacy as a dedicated advocate for the people of Baringo and as a significant figure in Kenyan politics is expected to endure. In one of his last social media engagements, Cheptumo had expressed support for Raila Odinga in the African Union Chairperson elections, reflecting his interest in regional and international affairs.
