Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has reaffirmed the Orange Democratic Movement's (ODM) intention to field a presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the Mombasa Governor’s Eid Baraza at Treasury Square on Saturday, Raila addressed concerns about the party’s ongoing cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza government, emphasizing that ODM remains committed to contesting for the presidency. The announcement comes as ODM navigates a complex political landscape, balancing its role as a collaborator in national development with its aspirations to lead the country. Raila clarified that ODM’s engagement with the current administration is driven by a commitment to national unity and development, not political compromise.
“Kenya is more important than individuals and that is why Kenyans must unite and work together, and doing so is not betrayal,” he stated, underscoring that the party's collaboration aims to foster peace and create a conducive environment for development.
The Mombasa event also served as a platform for ODM officials to respond to recent criticisms from former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi. Muturi’s disapproval of President William Ruto’s administration had drawn sharp reactions from ODM members. Raila used the opportunity to call for more decisive measures to combat corruption and urged Parliament to prioritize the welfare of devolved governments by disbursing the proposed Sh460 billion county allocation in a timely manner.
He also called on the government to enhance health services across the nation. During the forum, ODM legislators challenged Muturi to substantiate his corruption claims against the government.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir dismissed Muturi’s accusations as unfounded, suggesting they were an attempt to remain politically relevant after his removal from Cabinet. National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohammed raised questions about the inflated cost of the Bunge Tower project, pressing Muturi, who served as Speaker when the project’s budget expanded from Sh6 billion to Sh27 billion, for explanations.
