Over 500,000 Kenyans Using Cannabis as Drug Abuse Spreads Across Counties

Kenya is dealing with a growing drug problem as more people, especially young people, are using cannabis (also known as marijuana).

Government officials and health experts are very concerned about this trend.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen recently warned that cannabis use is rising fast and called it a "dangerous trend." He spoke after visiting Nakuru, a town that has become a major route for illegal drugs and fake alcohol. Other counties such as Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Kericho, and Narok are also struggling with drug abuse.

The government plans to take strong action against drug dealers and those making illegal alcohol. This shows how seriously the issue is being taken. According to a 2022 report by NACADA (National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse), over 500,000 Kenyans aged 15 to 65 are using cannabis. Most users are men, but many women use it too.

Cannabis is being grown in places like Mount Kenya, Lake Victoria, and the coast. Some of it is used in Kenya, while some is smuggled out of the country, showing that international drug networks may be involved. Health experts warn that using cannabis often—especially strong types—can harm the brain, heart, and mental health. Young people are especially at risk, as cannabis can affect their memory, ability to make decisions, and may lead to addiction.

At the same time, the debate on whether to legalise cannabis continues. Former presidential candidate George Wajackoyah once suggested growing marijuana for export. Many people, including religious leaders, opposed the idea. However, others believe a legal cannabis industry could help the economy and reduce illegal trade.

There is also growing interest in the medical uses of cannabis. Some studies show that cannabis may help treat conditions like epilepsy, chronic pain, anxiety, and even cancer. The plant's industrial version, called hemp, is also useful. Hemp can be used to make clothes, paper, and even eco-friendly building materials.
