Renowned Classic FM presenter Maina Kageni has shocked many online after revealing that he will be contesting for the Nairobi County Women Representative seat. The radio king on Wednesday announced the move just a few hours after making a post asking his fans to watch out for a major announcement to be made on his Facebook page.
The presenter announced he has already been cleared to contest by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), and will be on the ballot in the August 8 polls. He further stated that he will be contesting as an independent candidate after his clearance by the registrar of political parties.
Interestingly, the Maina and King’ang’i in the Morning show host chose a wig as his symbol during the contest.
He posted his clearance papers from IEBC and registrar of parties allowing him to run for office that was created for women.
In the video, he said, “For more than 10 years I have sat on air and addressed issues that regard women in Kenya, it started as a joke that I need to run for women Representative. Initially, I didn’t take them seriously but I realized the demand was real, after much thought, consideration and consultation with Nairobi’s women, electorate, I have decided that this is the time to make a move.”
He thanked his supporters on Facebook adding, “I had really really, really thought about it hence my decision. Thank you friends, thank you family. 2017 is my year and it is the beginning of new things. #Elections2017KE #TukutaneKwaDebe
Whether this is a prank, a publicity stunt or a joke, we all wait to see how this unfolds.
The seat has attracted many candidates including incumbent Rachael Shebesh of Jubilee and Esther Passaris of ODM.

Are you for real right now? Maina Kageni is not a transgender and shame on you for even suggesting so ( And your ignorance is displayed here yet you call yourself a Dr?). He is more of a man , than most men because he is in touch with his femininity and champions women causes which you clearly has issue with. Thank you my village mate for standing up for women and women issues!
When will your bachelor village mate marry ndipo aongeage mambo ya marriges akiwa na mboma?
I do not have to answer you., why don't you go ask him on twitter or facebook, he is very responsive to your kind......
Eti ....Mboma! Really is that Swahili?
If it was a Luo making such an "annoucement" you would really be Throwing Tribal Stones at him.
@ Dr. Koni, you are a true embarassment more so with the fact that you have publicly chosen to identify yourself as a DR. You ought to know bette; the true definition of a representative; a person chosen or appointed to act or speak for another or others, in particular. So what and how in the world do you compare this position with being a transgender???????? If a lawyer is "representing" a criminal in a court; does it mean the lawyer is also a criminal just by representation? Get enlightened and think rationally. This is a job opportunity for him, quite a genius and unconventional approach.
@GG, women rep' was created for women not for men. Go back and remind yourself or read about that position if there is anything out there over the internet. It is part of gender quotas legislation. There were very few women MPs compared to men. This is different from a lawyer representing a criminal, women etc.
@ Kenya, kwani unasoma nini? The guy has been legally cleared to run for the position; meaning he meets the requirements /qualified legally to contest. So if you have a problem, go argue with the lawmakers who approved him instead.
@Mzee, something is not right here. either Maina Kageni is lying or they gave him a certificate by mistake/chai. The constitution by passed in 2010 created women rep for female. They have not changed the constitution as far as I know
I wish Kenyans woke up and remove these expensive, useless seats from the constitution. And i have NAPPY gift for Maina. Can he tell me his size?Every male SOGHA wears nappies since his sewage linnings are always loose kwasambambu ya PENIS.
Almost every male is proud to a man apart from gays & transgender. Maina Kageni are you gay or transgender. Wamaume ni ndume
Maina says that he has been championing women's issues for ten years. To me this qualifies him to know a thing or two about their needs. The reason some of these offices are created solely for women is because men have monopolized most offices, and have barricaded themselves in there, making it difficulty for women to break in.
when we raise our boys and girls, we want the best for them. Now days we have male nurses, stay home dads...Like wise we have women that drive trucks, box, play soccer, rolls that were exclusively male.
Men can just be as good as women in taking care of babies,if taught, and encouraged to do so.Basically what Iam saying is that these gender rolls are largely designed by society, and not by nature. And as society evolves, those rolls will be reshaped to meet modern demands. And not Iam not saying that men and women are the same. That is not the issue here. We tend to limit potential of our women, and yet we want them to be the best at what they do...sounds paradoxical.I believe last time Obama was here, he touched on this issue.I are making progress. I chance to say that our women enjoy more freedom than those in Sheria ruled muslim world. They can even buy sex toys to amuse themselves with:)
Go for it Maina.
We scream ourselves sore when roles marked for a certain gender are given to the other gender ...... movie roles meant for blacks given to white folk....the question is always WHY? Aren't there capable people fitting that specific requirement? So I ask, have we run out of women in Nairobi County? Are women UNABLE or INCAPABLE of representing themselves? Unless Maina first confirms what the grapevines have whispered for years; that he is gay, he is NOT FIT to represent women. Period!
I just love his symbol .... a WIG .... another independent candidate from central wanted to use a thong as his symbol .... jameni
This is a sign of time. Please welcome Kenya's Caitlyn Jenner. The question I have for him/her is whether he/she is planning to go under the knife and if so how soon?. Also as a transgender is he/she planning to wear women clothing?. His/her funs would love to see him/her wear women's clothing ASAP. Kenya has become a true democracy in Africa and I commend it for allowing transgender people like Miss Maina Kageni to exercise their constitutional rights.
