Government Approves Establishment of Sh800 million Cemetery for Rich Kenyans

Kenya's first private cemetery that will target super rich Kenyans is set to be established on a 69-acre of land in Nyandarua County at a cost of Sh800 million.

This comes after government through Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu approved its setting up. In a gazette notice, government said the property known as Gates of Pearl will be situated next to Kinale Forest and will proceed into full development where 35,000 “resting places’’ will be available for sale at premium prices.

An unit at the cemetery is set to go for Sh130,000, with a single grave having a lease of up to 50 years. The contract to set up the facility, which will have a chapel, a petrol station and a cafeteria has been awarded to two Canadian landscape architectural firms, Erik Lees & Associates and Birmingham & Wood Architects.

Surrounding each gravesite will be concrete seats, where relatives and friends can converge for annual memorials.

“The memorial park will provide premium interment lots and memorialization sites,” said Alliance Capital, the main investor of the project, which has since received a go ahead from the National Environmental Management Authority (Nema).

Muuaji/cannibal Raila is the only person who has done a good job on this issue.Mulevi Raila is always happy with any human death. He gets all the delicacy(without adding anything) he needs while others are moarning or burying. He does not even roast of fry.A living being feeds of cooked food.He recently introduced Kalonzo and Joho to it and all are enjoying every meal as supplies last.

Those called super rich in Kenya have farms. Many Kenyans are buried in their farms aka family cemetery according to Kenyan culture. It is the poor who need the cemetery because they do not have farms.

This is uncultural for pure kenyans but the concept may work for the rest. " lease of upto 50 yrs" That means less than, to 50 yrs! Then what happens after that? Pay more for another 50 yrs or exhume your loved one and reburry the remains at "home's cemetery"?

we should encourage cremeation.saves space and can equally serve the rich as well as the poor

What a waste. Cremation is way to go...your body is useless as soon as you stop breathing. Your spirit can live on by ashes...

This is good news to Nyandarua residents. It will afford them a chance for the government to tarmac the roads leading to cemetery or they will refuse to be buried there. Dead rich people have finally come to rescue Nyandarua from marginalization!!!. Nyandarua historical injustice is finally been addressed by dead rich people

Build it and they will come. I see employment opportunities in this project. Very good idea. Kenya is really keeping up with the world.

Waste of valuable land and money. Go back to African traditions and beliefs. We do not need to copy the west on this. Our dead are remembered in the living. Yes, spend the money in Nyandarua but not on the dead but on the living. This is insanity. Africans do not ever visit the dead after they die. What is such a cemetry for? other than copying for the sake of copying. We carry our dead in our souls.

After the funerals, the likes of Rasta, Wanugu, Wacucu and Shimoli will visit these graves and steal the super rich coffins. Ama there will be security? Haijalishi, ni nchi ya kitu kidogo. At a small fee, the security will cooperate. Wezi wa majeneza wanameza mate.

It's not a waste of money. I see a lot of ancillary business opportunities arising from this project. Security jobs, landscaping, gravediggers, petro stations, bars, restaurants etc... Land prices will also go up around the beautiful facility.

This kind of thinking is the reason Kenya is being sold for cheap. We ought to be more principled than this with our cultural values intact. Let our Kenyan culture be the guiding principle not the western culture least we end up like headless chicken running around

Yet the poor residents have no piece of land to live on leave alone bury their dead.Of all the counties where land is needed for agriculture and housing this so called Jubilee government will finish Kenya.Set up the cemetery in Baringo Turkana or North eastern where nothing grows and the land will not be missed.Surely greed and inequality has no limits hii serikali bandia itatumaliza.Happy resistance 2018 to you and yours.

For Africans, we do our best for the living not for the dead. This is waste of public resources. We need a referendum on this one. I hope African fight against this useless project. How many grave sites do we expect to have for the rich in the next 100 years. Ohh no. This one is a no no. The dead rich will be consuming the resources of the living while they are dead. This is a no go zone for the Africans. How many grave sights do we have for the last 50 years. We haven't been able to feed the living, but we have extra land(resources) to allocate the dead. Our priorities are messed up. Time to rethink this strategy. This is not development. This are some of the things we do out of stupidity.

It’s a private firm which is doing so not the government.Ngaii fafa diaspora mnakuwanga na umama mwingi sana. The company bot land n it’s investing in the cemetery, the gover only Approved so this idiots blaming the gover need to understand so???Its a private cemetery thou I support it instead of pple bin hurried in their half acre or quarter plot especially in kiambu.Cremation is the best n cheaper thou

Mumbi (not verified)     Fri, 12/29/2017 @ 07:01pm

Give me a break! It's just 69 acres for God's sake! 800 million shilling project. There's plenty of idle land lying around and nobody complains. No homeless people will get that land cemetery or no cemetery. Na hiyo ni maendeleo.

Private or not, our African culture and traditions should be considered when putting up some of these projects. All the resources belong to Mwananchi and therefore should in one way or other either be our mirror image or be beneficial to us. These are some of the useless projects that will eventually be abandoned or uprooted in future when we finally accept who we are and not become copy cats. No African believes there is anything to visit or talk to after death. We bury the dead in our backyard and plant a banana or a tree and only remember the dead in our soul. We never even visit them in our backyard. The dead are dead and they keep on living in us and in our children. Again, wrong idea. The dead whether rich or poor are just that dead. They are no longer useful to the living. They should not be put into consideration while allocating our resources. BAD IDEA!

African culture and traditions my foot. Where was the "culture" when they were putting up malls left, right, and center. This is private land that belongs to the deed holder and not any random mwananchi. This project is specifically targeted to the very rich Kenyans (which would exlude you Mr. Anoymous). Private investors are putting down 800 million of their cash so that's no skin off your nose or ass. Not everyone who lives in Kenya (especially the super rich) are Africans. Kenya is very cosmopolitan with Italians, Israelis, Britons, Americans, and Germans settling in Kenya permanently and being buried here when they die. Nobody is forcing anybody to pay 130,000 for a grave so willing buyer, willing, seller. Mind your own damn business. This stuff is out of your league!

Which African culture are you talking about? The only culture i have heard of is where our great, great, great grandfathers abandoned their dead at the forest/bushes for hyenas(Railas) to feed on.Today you spend millions to care for the dead yet many of you(even here in diaspora) can never give $20 to purchase medicines for the living yet you contribute $100 for CARGO(dead body) to be airlifted home for burial.I have already paid for my cremation at Elliott City,MD if i die while in US.Hii ukasia wa kulipa shs 3m.to take the body home muache.Contribute to the living beings.Let Raila take care of the dead.

Ngaiii fafa diaspora refungees it doesn’t belong to gover. Its private so don’t mix private n gava.Tes it mite turn out to b white or black or pink elephant but it’s upto each individual to either buy it to the project or not??? 69 acres sounds small but trust me it’s big divide that into 3x6 so u actually get more than 35000 dead pple there. But again as someone said kuchoma watu is the right way to go.Actually 800m is cheaper including the tarmac they have to do,fencing n decorating the cemetery, church for prayers so it me sound a lot but I think it’s worth it!If 130k include everything or u have to do is take ur yr body there I think it’s a good deal for those who r in diaspora!Cu guys can afford it juu mko mayuuu.

Tutaiga mila za watu wengine mpaka lini? Maiti ni maiti. Mtu akishakufa, yafaa azikwe bila gharama zozote. Yafaa azikwe bila sanduku lolote. Baada ya kuchimba kaburi, atiwe ndani ya gunia, halafu aingizwe kaburini. Asiwekewe msalaba alipozikwa. MAITI NI MAITI HAINA TAJIRI WALA MASKINI.

Enemies of development are quick to use "African culture" to oppose projects which they don't support. The rich live in secluded neighborhoods, their kids go to exclusive private schools. They belong to private country clubs and are treated in private hospitals. Their bodies are sent to expensive funeral homes and transported in fine limousines.
Why would they be buried next to paupers in Lang'ata?
Unless you live in a Manyatta and your wardrobe is red shuka, any talk of culture is pure hypocrisy.
We are not living in the stone age. Culture is not static but changes with time.

What a gross subject to step into the new year with. I second Maxiley, although I get some kind of look when I voice this to my family. Personally, I can't stand being lowered six feet under, whilst the rest of you scatter back to your warm beds leaving me alone dead or whatever! Taboo subject and one that needs careful approach lest you offend your loved ones. A little like organ donation.... Anyway, never been vain in life, so why would I be in death? Simple burial for me and if there is surplus money, donate to the needy or family. Lease of 50 years is daylight robbery, it's normally 99 years.
