Kenyan comedian 'David The Student', whose real name is David Kangogo, has reportedly returned to Kenya after life in the United States proved hard.
The entertainer had moved to the US with hopes of finding greener pastures but life in the 'land of opportunities' turned unbearable after his comedy career hit a snag.
Last month, Student faced accusations of conning Kenyans in the US by borrowing cash and failing to pay back.
‘’Red alert my diaspora people. I want to notify you of a con man who has given some of us a head time here in the diaspora…comedian ‘David the Student’’ from Churchill show is a real con man," one Kenyan living in the US said on social media.
He also allegedly solicited cash from Kenyans in the diaspora to help his father whom he claimed had been diagnosed with cancer.
Responding to the accusations days later, the former Churchill Show comedian confessed to to borrowing cash from Kenyans in the US and apologized for not refunding it.
“Hello, I have spent time reading this, and some of it is true(the borrowing of Money) But I have never told anyone my Dad has cancer. Coming here(America) made me realize life here ain't what we see and think there’s a dollar tree falling and people catch…being here for a couple of months had made me appreciate the hard work most of you guys (Kenyans in America) work so Hard to take care of your families and to live the American Dream. I apologies to anybody and everyone those I borrowed and those who lent me and I’ve not refunded. I take full responsibility and I am ashamed,” he comedian said.
“.... I am taking full responsibility of some of the accusations.. and from the bottom of my heart I am sorry” added David.
Speculation has it that Kangogo returned to Kenya two weeks ago and has since maintained a low profile.
“Naambiwa amesharudi Kenya na beste yake mmoja wa karibu sana but ameamua kucheza tu chini, lakini ni kama jamaa yuko area amejichimbia place tu fulani,” a comedian who spoke on condition of anonymity told a local news website.

Most DEGREES made in US (except NURSING and a few) are USELESS especially in the US itself. Why? Because most Colleges/Universities in The US are pure Con-Business
@GUEST1, that is true. Colleges/Universities are like factory where you have products like coke/beer moving on the conveyor belt. In Colleges/University the conveyor belt is moving the product called students. Some will admitted everybody who apply or tell you to take prerequisites classes. They must have a certain number of students to keep the 'Con-Business' running
Exactly. If US Colleges/Universities collapse, Banks and Student Loan lenders will follow Suit (even the Economy too).
Somebody sang a song called UVIVU NI ADUI WA UJENZI WA TAIFA in 1970s or early 80s.Kwaheri conman Kagongo.
Comedy is no Lazy nor Laughing matter; it's is Hard work.
America is not easy. Youngsters fit better since time is on their side. For older folks, it is almost always a push back.
Did he hope to be on Saturday night live?
I agree with Kagongo.Jamaa alikia mvivu. There is more that one way to make money(legally). If people are not laughing at your jock, roll your sleeve, get in the trenches and do some hard work, put yourself in school to pursue what you think will get you money. And hopefully it would be something you like doing.Conning people will get you afew bruises, legal, and metaphorically.
@Kenya stop being naive. You can get a job in US even with a Kenyan degree without having to study here. I got a job with my degrees here unless you want to do what Kenyan in US advice most people to do, CNA etc.
@mswahili, read my comments again. I said 'MANY' but 'ALL'
Sure, I also got a job here with my Kenyan education and experience, it all depends with who is leading you in USA, but ukifungua macho you will go far
Yuko na ma karatasi?badilisha swag utafaulu!dont give up if you know what you want!!gotta be hungry
Let him go back and start making jokes about America and diaspora. He will lie a lot!
As they say: Tembea Uone Mengi. Meanwhile: East or West, Kenya is best (even though Corrupt as Hell).
Yes this place is not the Hollywood you thought. This place is the great equalizer. Doctor, architect, professor, teacher or comedian it doesn't matter you have to humble yourself and start from the bottom. People work two-three jobs to be able to support themselves, there families and maybe go to school. Lucky you have the option of going back. Go spread the word huku si Vegas sevens peke yake.
Surely life can be tough. The problem is the lies we tell ourselves and pass on to the next generation.
A recent poll said many Kenyan young people would give up anything to live in America.
People even go as far as saying the would rather clean toilets in America than live in Kenya.
When someone is unable to re adjust to American life the relatives back home say he is a bad person.
If someone is not married in their mid thirties, the relatives say he is a bad person.
If someone does not send money back home, the relatives say he is a bad person.
So what are these people trying to say .... That by sending someone abroad the person will succeed automatically ??? What Nonsense !!
Here is the my truth:-
When I first arrived in the America here are the jobs I worked:-
- Hand Carwash, vacuum & shampoo - $2k-3k every month.
- CNA, Psyc- Sitter:- $2k-2.5k a month.
- Order Selector - $2.5k a month. etc ....
On the flip side in Kenya I started at KSH40K and went up to KSH100k.
The main question becomes IS MOVING to America worth it ??
It depends on your situation, if you want to work for the rest of your life. Then by all means move to America. Most of the Kenyans in America eke a living by working all sorts of jobs from burger flipping to bottom cleaning. Its a risk which you have to take by yourself, if you put all your eggs in one basket then don't come complaining that America is bad or Kenya is bad. Both places are good it depends what you are there for.
It all depends on several things: level of education, type of job, work ethics and street smarts. You can make a lot of money by street smarts. You come out with any idea like dropping and picking kids from a specific school and take them to practice soccer, baske and all types of games. Doing so can make you some money. That’s how a lot of people have these service companies. Now somebody will say they cannot come to US to be drivers.. Good, then do IT and you will make money. Ok be a seasoned athlete and the sky is the limit. The difference with Most Kenyans is class. Only in Kenya is class a bid deal. My bosses boss who is a VP makes his own coffee at the cafeteria and we line up to do so. Hakuna hi mambo ya Mdozi stuff. Hakuna kuweka Lito kwa kiti na kutenda kutembea town. Not in US but if you work hard, you make a better life for you and yours
M still stuck at “street smarts”.....I personally think it’s everything especially after a certain age, say about 25 or thereabouts. Way too many “professional career” folks get disappointed by life in the US & become depressed or stuck in poorly paying jobs while others are stil hanging onto their stupid “ukenya”, looking down on the rest of their compatriots engaged in not so prestigious jobs. Juzi I went to a function full of doctors, nurses, architects, engineers from Kenya & you should have been there usikie self introductions - mimi ni ENGINEER Gitau ad I am the one who designed & buirt the bridge on Exit 123, I5, CA blah, blah, blah while the majority of the rest of us wildlife just stared. Professionals ought to remember that they aren’t the smartest tools in the shed ....there are others better than them
Fact is the US is not for the faint of heart. Huku ni survival for the willing.
Ndugu Kangogo:
Nakuomba tafadhali uwaambie Wakenya wenzako wasichezee pesa tunazowatumia kwa sababu kila senti tunayopata hapa Marekani tumeishughulikia kwa jasho letu.
America is very easy, there are libraries, schools, a developed economy, ease of doing business and only lazy thuggery Kenyans will find it hard coz their is no kite kigodo or umalaya. There is even 24 hr stoma na maji kwa wingi!
He’s back in Seattle and he’s not just conning Kenyans! He’s preying on older women now. And he has a very unpleasant white girlfriend that threatened to kick my ass. lol. I’m not sure why he is now an only fans star. He’s a piece of shit.
To get the American dream you have to go to school in USA because many degrees are not transferable. You can use them to go to another school in USA but not to get work. That means you have to start from scratch and climb the ladder. Even acting you will need some training
