Kenyan Woman Accused of Infecting Neighbor's 9-Month-old Baby with HIV after Breastfeeding Him

A Kenyan woman has been arrested after she deliberately infected her neighbor's nine-month-old baby with the HIV virus.

27-year-old Susan Njeri from Njoro, Nakuru County reportedly breastfed the baby knowing too well that the infant could contract the virus from her.

The child’s mother had left the infant under Njeri’s care and left for work without the knowledge that her neighbor was HIV positive. Njeri was busted by other neighbors breastfeeding the kid after she unsuccessfully tried to calm him down.

On Tuesday, the woman was charged in a Nakuru court with deliberately infecting the baby with the virus.

“On September 18 at Gichobo area in Njoro Sub-county having actual knowledge that you were infected with HIV, you intentionally breastfed the infant which you knew or ought to have known was likely to lead to the child being infected,” Senior Principal Magistrate Joe Omido read the charges.

She pleaded not guilty to the charges and will remain in custody pending conclusion of the investigations. Her application for bail will be heard on October 2nd.

“The accused is hereby remanded pending the conclusion of the investigation. The bond terms will be revisited on October 2,” the Judge ruled.
