From Githunguri to the US: How Gospel Artist Naomi Kihuha Is Telling the Story of Kenyan Diaspora Life
Kenyan gospel artist Naomi Kihuha has expanded her presence on Citizen TV’s Diaspora Connect, where she shares the experiences of Kenyans living in the United States and explores the realities of life abroad.
Originally from Githunguri and now based in the US, Kihuha uses the programme to discuss issues affecting diaspora communities, including faith, identity, daily living costs and access to government services. Her appearances combine personal experiences with broader stories from Kenyans living overseas.
During her first appearance on the show, Kihuha spoke about the role of church communities in helping her adjust to life in the United States. She explained that churches provided spiritual support and helped her build social connections while adapting to a new environment.
Later episodes focused on the practical aspects of diaspora life. In one segment filmed at HMart, an international grocery chain, Kihuha highlighted the high cost of Kenyan foods such as nduma and pumpkins. The feature examined the expense of maintaining familiar food traditions while living abroad.
Another episode, filmed in Washington, DC, followed a mobile consular outreach event attended by Kenyans seeking services such as passport and identification document renewals. The segment showed the challenges many diaspora residents face when trying to access government services outside Kenya.
Kihuha has also covered lifestyle and wellness topics. One episode featured modern fitness facilities and examined the increasing focus on health and wellbeing among Kenyan communities abroad.
Speaking about her work, Kihuha said she aims to present an honest picture of life overseas. She noted that many people have assumptions about living abroad and said she wants audiences to understand both the opportunities and the challenges while remaining connected to home.
Alongside her television work, Kihuha continues to pursue her music career. She has announced plans to release a new gospel song in June, which coincides with her birthday month. Through television and storytelling, Kihuha continues to contribute to conversations about migration, identity and the experiences of Kenyans living abroad.
