Sifuna Plans Major Bungoma Meeting Ahead of 2027 Polls

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has announced that he will hold a major political meeting in Bungoma County later this month to discuss the region's future and preparations ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during the burial of Bumula MP Jack Wamboka's brother, Sifuna said the meeting would bring together political leaders, professionals, youth representatives and opinion leaders from across Bungoma County. He said the forum would focus on development priorities and the political direction of the county, the wider region and the country.

"We will soon hold a major meeting in Bungoma where we shall discuss the future of our county, our region and our country," he said.

The announcement comes amid growing political activity in Western Kenya, where competing political groups are seeking to strengthen their influence. A few days earlier, Sifuna and Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa exchanged sharp remarks during another funeral in Bungoma, highlighting rising political tensions in the region.

Sifuna also addressed his political future following his removal as secretary-general of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). He rejected claims that leaving the party position would weaken his influence, saying his electoral mandate remained his primary source of legitimacy.

"I was elected by the people before becoming secretary-general and I will continue serving them regardless of the position I hold in the party," he said.

His remarks come as ODM continues to adjust its political strategy following its cooperation with President William Ruto's administration. Sifuna has remained one of the party's strongest critics of the arrangement, a position that has at times placed him at odds with some members of the party leadership.

The planned Bungoma meeting is expected to strengthen Sifuna's political support in Western Kenya and provide a platform for discussions on opposition cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election. Political analysts say the gathering could also shape future alliances and leadership discussions within the region.
