Kenyan Man Titus Wanjala Killed After Car Plunges Into Iowa Pond
Two people, including a Kenyan man, died after their vehicle entered a pond and became submerged in Waukee, Iowa, on 7 July.
Police identified the victims as 43-year-old Titus Wanjala and 23-year-old River Cropper. According to Waukee police, witnesses saw the vehicle enter the pond along Manchester Boulevard but did not see anyone leave before it sank.
Emergency crews recovered both occupants from the water and took them to nearby hospitals, where they were later pronounced dead. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
Waukee Police Chief Chad McCluskey expressed condolences to the families of the two victims and said the department stood with them during the difficult period.
Mr Wanjala's death has deeply affected the Kenyan community in the United States.
On Sunday, 12 July, members of the diaspora gathered for a candlelight vigil to honour his memory. The event, held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., brought together relatives, friends and fellow Kenyans, who offered prayers, shared tributes and supported his family.
The gathering reflected the close ties within the Kenyan diaspora and the support communities provide after the loss of one of their own. Memorial events such as this allow family and friends to mourn together while preserving cultural traditions in a new setting.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing. Meanwhile, the deaths of Titus Wanjala and River Cropper have left families, friends and the wider Waukee community mourning their loss as tributes continue to honour their lives.
