Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Announces Reduced Parking Fees for City Motorists

Governor Mike Sonko has announced a 33 percent reduction in parking fees for motorists in Nairobi.

Sonko says motorists will from next month be charged Sh200 to park their cars, down from the current Sh300.

“After consultations with various stakeholders, including ward representatives, we have agreed to slash the parking fees in order not to overburden motorists,” says the Governor. 

Sonko however says the fee would be reviewed upwards once the ongoing projects meant to address congestion in the Kenyan capital are completed.

“I know that this (reducing the fees) will increase congestion in the city centre but again, we cannot punish Nairobi residents because the projects like BRT and construction of bus termini outside the CBD are still ongoing,” adds Sonko.

Before 2013, motorists paid Sh140 to park their vehicles but the fee was increased to Sh300 after Nairobi's first Governor Evans Kidero assumed office. The move aimed at increasing revenue for the county government.

The Sonko administration had sought to increase the fee to Sh400 through the County Finance Bill 2018, a move that sparked uproar.

During the campaign period for 2017 elections, Sonko promised motorists that the fee would be reduced to Sh140 if he was elected.
