Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika's Husband Arrested for Defrauding KRA of Sh64 Million

Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika's husband Samuel Mburu has been arrested in connection with Sh64 million tax fraud case.

The Standard reports that the businessman has been arrested alongside 15 others for allegedly defrauding the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) of millions of shillings.

Mburu and his brother, Hillary Kamau are said to have defrauded the taxman through their company, Landmark Freight Services Limited.

Mburu's company is accused of colluding with Gendipe Enterprises and Rupai Trading Limited to import goods from Dubai, which they declared to be machinery, whose payable tax is between 0 and 10 percent.

It was later established that the companies imported cooking oil whose import tax range from 25 and 35 percent. The three companies should have paid tax amounting to Sh64 million.

“Further it was established that Gendipe Enterprises paid a penalty of Sh148, 816 instead of the required Sh4.4 million while Rupai Trading Ltd paid a Sh148,300 penalty instead of Sh4.4 million. In general, the country lost a total of Sh64, 944,112 that would have been received as revenue,” the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji says.

“Following numerous cases of evasion and avoidance of tax payment that has affected the collection of government revenue, the DCI commenced investigations with regard to mis-declarations and importation of contraband products into the country."

The suspects and companies will be charged with connivance to commit an offense, concealment of imported goods, abuse of office and neglect of official duty among others.

KRA has since seized six top-of-the-range vehicles belonging to Mburu, who is reported to be a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto.

It is not surprising that most of the corruption cases have have a link to a top leader. This creates lethargy in the cases and derails the process. @2022 the campaign should be anti-corruption, anti-corruption, anti-corruption period!
