Kenyan Comedian ‘David The Student’ Racially Abused by Lyft Passenger in the US

Kenyan comedian David Kangogo, alias ‘David The Student’, was recently subjected to racial abuse in the US.

The incident happened on Tuesday in Issaquah, Washington after David, who works as a Lyft driver, picked a man and woman outside a local sports grill.

But hell broke loose after David, 30, allegedly requested the man to wear a mask, which is part of the measures Lyft has put in place to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

David pulled over and filmed the man hurling racist abuse towards him. The white man called him the N-word and threatened to 'p*** in his car.'

“You f***ing piece of s**t. You will never drive; you will never drive,” the man shouts at David.

The woman accompanying the man takes out her phone and starts filming the incident. “Joe stop, I'm videoing. Stop, stop. I'm videoing. You stop,” she yells.

David told the media that the first thing that came to his mind was to record the incident as he feared it would be flipped on him.

“For me I was just thinking, get what exactly happened as they are going to flip this thing on me and make it look like I attacked them,” he said.

“So I just pulled over and got out of the car and told them I have canceled the ride, they can go ahead and get another drive,” he added.

The video of the incident has since gone viral online gaining nearly 500,000 views and hundreds of comments.

Following the incident, the man was banned from using Lyft with the company terming his behavior as unacceptable.

“There is no place for discrimination of any sort in the Lyft community, and this behavior is unacceptable.”

“We have permanently removed the rider from the Lyft community and are in touch with the driver to offer our support,” Lyft said in a statement.

You are lucky Uphill that your passengers were not a Black Americans who could even have beaten you like a dog which feed on meat and left the bones.Your were only abused which is worse in Nairobi.Maybe you thought you were in Nairobi where comedians and local actors are arrogant and behave as if as they are MORE HUMANS than others.Did you watch expired Ojwang AKILINGA in a casket as he was being thrown to the MAGGOTS,CRICKETS,BLOW FLIES,BEETLES etc? in aI think you could have added how you were treated by Jaluos when you visited Kisumu in 2007 & 2008.Can you also include how Black/African police treat other Africans/Kenyans?Why don't you people complain when African Kenyans are killed by African policemen and African thugs on daily basis? It is the same in US where all Africans/Blacks are silent if a Black thugs kills Black people or any other person.

Yea people who been mistreated in the mama land turn over n keep, stepping coz its really difficult to change an old mind like yours from tribal borders of thoughts, same line of thoughts that would not elect another individual from another tribe into leadership in a diffrent tribe zone like say a Kalenjin as governor of Kiambu or Kisumu,u wount understand the frustrations of the American Afro the systematic barriers n huddles they still face today unless u encounter the yourself huddles seen n unseen racial injustices everywhere from school to work to places of leisure.

Morris you are letting stereotypes pushed by white people color your commentary. They push negative stereotypes of Africans to black Americans and vice versa. Not all black people will accept you and not all black people will reject you. The same is true of Kenyans btw. I'm generalizing here but white people as a society have mistreated and assumed they are superior to black people for hundreds of years. Even the liberal ones don't really think you are their equal. White people have formed churches (the southern Baptist convention) based on a desire to keep black people enslaved, they used the US govt to ensure black people stayed poor and in ghettos (redlining), the promise of special order 15 was never kept(40 acres and a mule) only black people had to endure the 3/5ths rule, Dredd Scott, Plessey v Ferguson, lynchings, poll taxes and myriad other egregious racist actions. If you live in the US, you owe a debt of gratitude to black Americans who you so cavalierly dismiss for your ability to live and/or vote in the US just as you owe one to Kenyan freedom fighters for wiyathi. There are a lot of imperfect people in Kenya but that should not stop someone from pointing out Karens, Chads and other racists bad behavior in the US.

This is a stupid comment unrelated to the discuss today. If you have issues on black on black crime let’s talk about it. Else you are just being plain stupid let’s not mince words

I would be scare too David because the dude is 20 times your feeble size!! What kind of a world are we living!!?? Just be careful out there in whatever you are doing!! God bless!!

@David, “ please remember all of us are students of our life experiences”!

Last Friday, I got cursed out at a Target store for no apparent reason but I choose to remain calm and peaceful!!

I thought of what my mama would have done and I concluded should would have lowered the steam down!

I did not have my phone with me to film the scene!

And yes, those who wish to call me a coward should feel free to do so! I decided to just walk away!!

It’s wise, very wise to just walk away. If possible, smile as you do it. Unless it involves any form of physicality which may force you to act in a way to protect / defend yourself. Even then, your goal should be to get away
This is why: There are millions of miserable Americans who are soo pissed off by life & immediately feel a lot of pain when they see a person of color doing just ok, going about his business & looking contented. They are the zero sum game idiots who believe their misery is because of your success, perceived or real. They’ll therefore do everything they can to mess you up so that you can be miserable like them. Not to be insulting here but when you meet them out there, please treat them like dogs in your neighborhood. When you take a walk around your home, neighbors’ dogs often will bark at you, try to scare you because they erroneously believe you are a threat. Do you bark back? No, you don’t, right. You cross the street & keep walking, au sio? KEEP WALKING, guys!

Kimathi, you got insulted by a white man and kept quiet? This would make your namesake turn in his grave. Just apply to a circuit court for a name change.

@ ex-diaporian - please read @ mulachake advice above! “You don’t bark at vicious dog when it barks at you!” If that does not humble you, I don’t know what to tell you!

And no - a white guy did not insult me! A huge ragged tall black guy ( huge dude) insulted me just because I talked with an accent asking an employee for assistance, which the dude did not like!

I could have responded in kind, but mama did not raise a damn fool! Listen; mama’s wisdom always win because she sees very far indeed! Hope you have a mama to listen to! Women are better in thinking through situations than erratic dudes!

And yes, the late Kimathi can turn around in the grave all he wants because I decided to walk away from an idiotic fool! I’m a man of his own originality - names don’t determine how I react to situations.

I could have called the cops but again I did not want to see a huge dude getting choked to death in some shop! Life will teach him when I’m not part of his nonsense!

And may I remind you a little bit of your past in America? It is not surprising you were jailed in American prisons for over nine years because you are very foolish! I would not take your advise while you thought processes could even save you from wasting time in American jails!

I have read quite a bit of that part of your history which culminated in your deportation back to Kenya; never to set foot to America again! You have to know when to walk away without your name sakes turning around in the graves!

Knowledge, understanding and Solomonic wisdom come from above! And yes, I did say a 5 second prayer in the midst of some uncalled insults being hauled at me. The spirit of the Lord covered me as it is written in Psalms 91!! The Lord wins my battles all the time!

You are now beginning to use @Morris Menye little brains here! You two sound like twins! @Kimathi did the right thing to walk away!

Kimathi has already said you can call him a coward for making a wise decision to get away from trouble! He could have escalated the situation and then end up being shot. Americans carry guns like kids using toys in every neighborhood! You have to think safety at all times.

You want to stay away from those who behave and act stupid - and they are many out there, especially in these covid19 times!

It also does not matter who the attacker is; black, white, yellow, blue green, etc! It all depends on how you use you head to survive!!

Let Kagongo explain how he escaped from Kisumu human Vultures,Bears,Foxes and hyenas. There no way you can complain of racial discrimination in US but defend tribal killings committed in Kenya. The likes of human butchers Adour & Evans defend the evil acts as they are employed to BBQ human meat for visitors at Bondo 1,Karen.

I don't think anyone is defending ethnic killing or cleansing in Kenya. A little over 11 years ago my relatives within a 10km radius of Baricho were living in terror due to fellow sons of Mumbi who decided to take revenge after locals got fed up with being extorted. BTW andu a ruguru were not involved. Does this mean I should only comment on people in this small geographic area? Two wrongs don't make a right and we shouldn't ignore racist behavior because our people engage in murderous actions towards each other.

Sasa huyu Kangogo anapewa visitor visa halafu anajimulika akiwa anafanya biashara na kazi zingine. Wacha tu SMH.

Kimathi, your high school English teacher taught you how to summarize without writing unnecessary stuff. Use those lessons here. If lots of Mwakilishians worked at DOJ, I would be in jail by now from trumped up charges, because they believe like Hitler propaganda minister that if you repeat a lie a 1,000 times it becomes the truth

Being put in jail in a foreign country is something people need to know! It is good that you agree your mind level is still that of high school pupil or below. Now you are wasting off your life in Chagaa dens drinking hot liquor mixed with other illegal drugs!

The problem with you @exdiaporian is the fact that you spend too much valuable time worrying about others instead of putting your shambled life together!

We all know you spent several years in jail in America. That is a fact you can’t hide. You also personally complain about how you are bored in Kenya after deportation!

Please, fix your own life first so you can have something to show when making reference to others!
