Kenyans in Diaspora Defy COVID-19 Shocks, Send Home Sh31.5 Billion in March

Kenyans abroad continued to defy the COVID-19 pandemic shocks to send home $290.8 million (Sh31.5 billion) in March 2021.

The amount represents a 27.1 percent growth compared to $228.8 (Sh24.8 billion) remitted during the same month last year, according to the latest data by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

Kenyans living and working in the US are still the highest contributors, accounting for 55.9 percent of last month’s remittances.

Other key contributors include the UK with 11.2 percent, Saudi Arabia (4 percent), and Canada and Australia with 2.9 percent each.

CBK data shows that Kenyans in the US sent home Sh17.6 billion in the month under review, while those in Canada remitted $8.3 million (Sh899.7 million).

Kenyans living and working in African countries sent $14.7 million (Sh1.6 billion), with the highest coming from Tanzania (Sh401.1 million), Uganda (Sh249.3 million), and South Africa (Sh159.4 million).

Remittances from Europe totaled $62 million (Sh6.7 billion), with the top three sources being the UK (Sh3.5 billion), Germany (Sh878 million), and Switzerland (Sh411.9 million).

In Asia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE were the leading remittance sources, contributing Sh1.3 billion, Sh596 million, and Sh444 million respectively. Cumulatively, Kenya received $30.8 million (Sh3.3 billion) from the region.

The diaspora inflows have remained the country’s largest source of foreign exchange since 2015 when they overtook earnings from tea exports, horticulture, and tourism.

In January this year, Kenyans abroad sent home Sh30.5 billion and Sh28.4 billion in February.

Kenyans in the US....your hearts are in the right place..Heko! SAD though; YOU CAN'T EVEN VOTE!!!!!!!

Kenyans in Tz, wow! Who knew?

Diaspora should be a region of its own....with proper representation in all sectors....

31.5 billion shillings in one month? The economy should be booming if this money is going to peoples pockets. They have to be spending this money somewhere.
I need to move back to Kenya and be getting a cut of this pie.

Has anyone ever returned to Kenya and became successful? Share your secret. Potential returnee here...

The money is going to specific pockets because it is directly sent to family members and friends! Also the diaspora Kenyans have heavily invested in Kenya.

In turn the money is spent in the economy to boost economic growth in various sectors of the economy! There are many things one can do to make money and have a decent living. But you have to be prepared for the road blocks ahead before the business venture you get started in start thriving. It will take you at least five good years to start reaping some positive results in your venture.

The only problem I find in Kenya is the high rate of corruption, bureaucracy in getting things done and a high rate of insecurity!

There is corruption in buying property with the rate of conmen who sell “air” to greedy diaspora buyers who fail to do the proper property searches to establish the validity of the intended purchase.

Crime is increasing rapidly across the country due to lack of moral values and a high rate of joblessness.

The vain politicians have turned Kenya int the laughing stock of the world as they make stupid laws which benefit them alone. The current crop of politicians are the worst enemy to Kenya’s development! Most of them are pure thieves and the initiators of the deep corruption across the country. You can’t trust any one single politician or civil servant in Kenya. This is where Kenyans problems are solely found!

Yet, various business opportunities do exist but you have to curve your own things (niche) to help build a better country. It is still doable but be prepared to experience a share of frustrations in getting things done!

Do you know how to trade in the US stock markets? You can easily make money if you knew how to trade or have a good broker to help you! That investing in Kenya is not a sure thing! You can also buy property here in the USA and do turn overs! The land here is cheaper than land in Kenya by far! Sometimes you have to think out of the box because keeping your mind only focused in Kenya will do you no good! Expand your horizons by investing abroad!

@kk - I have turned to investing in Argentina and Costa Rica because the dealings there are very clear and honest!

I tried in Kenya and got conned badly! Kenyans in Kenya mainly see a vault full of dollar bills to exploit from you investing from the US. Even men of cloth can never be trusted in Kenya let alone other folks!

Buying real estate in Central America has been a good investment for me; and also a vacation location for me and my family! I used a doctor friend from Argentina and it has been nothing but happiness and joy. Honesty is the best policy when you are investing your money!

View property for sale in Turks and Kekois and other places. I slate those who trust folks back in Kenya! I got conned big time! I have no taste for the country any more!

Please watch out those telling how many cows, goats and chicken they have accumulated and are now willing to help you! Your money could be going to buy some chicken feed fir them while you are high and dry here in America! I got nothing against mkenya halisi willing to help you but don’t get conned!

Understand the business you want to do, plan accordingly then spend you money wisely! That is all I got to tell you brother!

@KK. I think that there is a lot of money than can be made in this diaspora community sector. I think that more and more Kenyans need to figure out businesses that provide legitimate goods and services to the diaspora community. Of course the main problem has been issues relating to honesty and integrity. Maybe the Govt also needs to facilitate creation of these type of Businesses with a view of enforcing honest business practices to cut back on scams. My 2 cents.

Good two sense! I urge the diaspora members not to get trapped by those who want to help with ulterior motives behind the whole scheme. Many are volunteering to help the dispose members but you have to know who you are dealing with! I have seen many in tears after they lost their money!

We do have grouping that are supposed to represent us but the bottom line is those Kenyans running the are idiots and conmen of the highest order! They are folks using those groupings to fatten their pockets. They are no good - black on black crimes is their motto!

Good job Diaspora! But I always tend to think that these figures may be a contributing factor in the mammoth levels of corruption by Government officials thinking that Diaspora money is an endless river that keeps on flowing towards that direction...and that Diaspora just collect funds from the floor/ground/trees, so that is easy money from just rich non-deserving Kenyans from not so rich backgrounds. Hawataki kupitwa na maskini. BURE KABISA!

@Mkenya thanks for sharing your story. It’s great to know you have achieved success after moving back to Kenya. I can’t lie that I’ve been very successful in this country but even with all that it never feels like home.
I’ve heard of returnees who failed miserably in Kenya. Your success is encouraging. I like the idea of owning units. I’ve bought plenty of land but the idea of building while I’m still in America scares me. I’ll let this covid die down I’ll entertain the idea of migrating back home. Corporate America is not cutting it anymore.

@kk please do not take the bait! I had a guy tell me the same sweet story about his successes (50 Fresian cows, 400 sheep that he sold wool to London, 7 kids going to top notch schools, wide driving the Newst bima, etc) after he returned to Kenya only to find out all that was fake upon flying back to find out the property he bought for me was owned by several others - it is now called buying “air space in Kenya”. Weeee, woi, be very careful guy!

Keep your money, buy a ticket and visit Kenya to scout for yourself! You don’t want to lose your money buy financing other folks way of life! Please keep your money!

@kk - please font let shillings 550k blind you and end up losing triple that amount! Red bells are ring here with @mkenya! I lost Kshs 70,000,000 in this kind of stuff! What glitters is not always gold! Kshs 550k is not much money to entice you to lose all your money! This guy may be honest but you need to research him out! But also remember, those you hire to research him could be cons too. It is the new Kenya my fren.

How can anyone in the diaspora trust a guy with a fake seudo name of @mkenya halisi? How many Kenyans carry this name in the first place? This is the hallmark of all conmanship! @kk don’t lose you money on a broad day light to a con! Don’t say you had not been warned! I have been there, done it and got conned! I now take the pain to regularly travel home to manage my stuff with a little help from my auntie! Be very careful unloading your dollars to some mkenya halisi dude in Kenya!

KK, home will always taste like home, and living in any new lands will never add up, however successful one is. There is something about home that is smells homier. However much I try to be happy or "settled", I always hit a brick wall. Brick walls include colleagues who are all Americans. There nothing I can share with these nyeuthis who looks like me. All they do is talk about women, movies and food. One Naija and Ghananian I work with have been "radicalized" by anything American and you cant even talk about investing home or discuss about where they came from. Its like their heart is here: will die and will be buried here. That makes me feel so lonely. But I am well prepared with properties here there and everywhere. Very soon am heading home. I cant trust those greedy Kenyan thieves and cons to built me anything: the brothers, sisters, uncles...all. Just prepare yourself well. But also prepare yourself for failures, ups and down, so that you don't regret later why you made that decision. Mkenya halisi's story is his, just pick up those ideas that will suit you.

@kk here comes a good sounding flowery offer from @halisi but be very careful of cons in Kenya! You may end up losing all your hard fortune to a guy you will never find in your life time!

I met a promising guy like @ halisi and then ended up losing nearly everything I had invested in Kenya!

You can do things in Kenya but you have to be personally involved in your own projects. Do not expect any person in Kenya to tell you the truth of what is going on. They all lie, they all steal, they all think the distance from USA to Kenya is that of heaven and earth and you will never find out when they are stealing your hard earned money!

Be extra careful dealing with @halusi or any other character in Kenya! Kenyans have changed for the worst! They are greedy and mostly conmen/women. They will hose you out and keep moving like nothing ever happened. I’m talking about Kenyans of all walks of life! Be very careful! The country have changed!

I don't know this Halisi person, but what I know is he lies about his departure from the US which puts his success stories into question. Finding someone trustworthy in Kenya to help with your investments is very difficult. While what he says sounds reasonable, remember he was happy when covid was hitting the US and western Europe hard apparently forgetting that a lot of Kenyans depend on these countries for tourism and diaspora funds. He honestly didn't care about the suffering this would bring to Kenyans who depend on foreign trade and tourism for jobs and income.

Home is where you raise your family and put food on the table. I was born in Kenya, I am a US citizen and raise my family here. I tried that home (kenya) investment craps and lost millions over 10 years. Couldnt even trust my own father/brother? I decided enough is enough and focused my investing within the US. I have never regretted it. If you have savings to invest, the US remains the safest place to fo it. OR you may as well hoard your money in treasury bonds with usgov and wait for the right opportunities. Investing in Kenya now is the riskiest move you can ever take. Stay away from anything property or farming. Don't be a cash cow and get used by some lazy bastards there who think we scoop dollars from river beds and all they do wait for mpesa freebies! Be careful ‘investing’ in kenya. Your risk, your choice!!

Very well said! Put your wealth where you are currently living! Property in Kenya is highly overrated. Everything you have said here happened to me over a period of 15 years! I turn my eyes in investing in the USA and now I have found an niche and properly grounded my feet! Kenya is in the book of history for me! I will never look over there to invest any penny! Too many wakora there! Too many uncertainties! Too much corruption! I still got a lot of land there though!

Why is @mkenya halisi so preoccupied with death? Are you writing your last epitaph here to say good bye to the world! To you all the money sent to Kenya by the diasporas is sent there to burry the dead!? Are you serious? Well, since you are now predicting your own death, why not dig a grave on your success land to make it easier for you wife and kids when you exit! What is the difference dying in Kenya and dying in America? Your jealousy of the diaspora speaks volumes! Be contented with your shs 500k and let others be! You are just singing the obvious song - oh invest here! Right! Those you are trying to advise make millions there in Kenya every month. Some in the diaspora have rental property making millions in Kenya. You don’t have to be rude because your behind was booted out of the US! Pease dude!
