Gachagua's Push for 'Riggy G' Trademark Approved

Gachagua's Push for 'Riggy G' Trademark Approved

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is set to own the trademark to his nickname “Riggy G”

The DP acquired the moniker in the run-up to the 2022 presidential election. Kenya Industrial Property Institute (Kipi) has approved DP's application to own the trademark of the nickname. Rigathi's push for the trademark commenced in November 2022, months after Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati announced their electoral victory in the race for State House.

If not validly opposed, Mr Gachagua will enjoy exclusive rights to use the “Riggy G” nickname in entertainment events among others. The nickname is the brainchild of then Catholic University law student Ivy Chelimo who shared the nickname while issuing her perspective in the deputy president debate that happened in July 2022. The monicker would then spread like bushfire, becoming a household name.

Mr Gachagua embraced the name and even met Ivy Chelimo who coined the moniker. Ivy said that she coined the name in a bid to evoke the interest of the youth in the Deputy Presidential debate.

“I wanted the younger population to connect with what was going on during the debates. I wanted them to be engaged and participate in the discourse and to not be detached from the goings-on of the day,” she said.
