Kenya on Course to Becoming Africa's Nuclear Training Hub

Kenya has been approved to host a nuclear and radiation safety training program for English-speaking African countries, solidifying its position as a regional leader in nuclear training.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a United Nations affiliate, has evaluated Kenya's ability to host the program and given a positive verdict. The five-month course which targets graduate-level professionals begins in October and will be spearheaded by the IAEA with oversight from the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA). Kenyatta University, Multimedia University, and 10 other institutions will provide logistical support for the program including lecture halls, labs, and accommodation for participants.

Full funding will be provided by the IAEA. This marks Kenya's first time hosting the program which was previously hosted by Ghana 12 times.  There are now fully operational labs and departments for studying physics and nuclear science and technology programs in Kenya. However, there is a need for adequate facilities to conduct practical sessions and the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA) is being challenged to ensure this.

The availability of nuclear demonstration equipment also needs to be ensured. The KNRA should seek support from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for topics where there is a lack of expertise. The findings of the week-long mission conducted by nuclear experts Sotiris Economides and Prof Augustine Faanu have been presented to KNRA officials and representatives from various universities and hospitals. KNRA Director General James Keter has expressed his appreciation for the training which will help build capacity for radiation protection in Kenya. The program is comprehensive and was developed over the past year in collaboration with the agency.

...not as good as it's made to sound. Give scholarships for abroad training...and there after Jobs huko maolaya to those you train. Two nuclear plants are already planned in Malindi and the community is 💯 not for it .🚭🚫
