Homeless Man Declines Generous Offer of Cash and House

In a heartwarming yet challenging encounter on Thika Road, activist Derrick Mbugua attempted to extend assistance to a homeless man named Mutoko.

Illuminating the space with their phones, Mbugua and his friends initiated a conversation with Mutoko, who resides in a makeshift shelter of garbage bags within a tunnel in Pangani. Despite their genuine efforts, Mutoko appeared hesitant, perhaps due to the unfamiliar surroundings and bright lights. Concerned about safety, Mbugua proposed relocating to a safer area for the discussion. However, Mutoko resisted the suggestion.

Undeterred by the challenges, Mbugua continued his efforts to improve Mutoko's living conditions. To his surprise, Mutoko declined every offer, including a generous cash gift and the offer of a house. Reflecting on the encounter, Mbugua emphasizes the inherent difficulties in connecting with individuals facing homelessness.

Despite the challenges and the rejection of his offers, Mbugua's compassionate efforts have been recognized and appreciated by social media users. Many convey hope that Mutoko might find assistance through someone familiar with his situation.

"You can oppose me but do I say, some people cannot live with other people."

"Thanks for the good work Derick hope someone who knows him can come to his rescue," some of the comments read.

Good for him. These social media celebs are always chasing clout. The mad decided that his present unfortunate position doesn’t warrant him being taken advantage of. Respect his stand.

I think Derrick showed compassion, but homeless for this guy seems to be the effect and not the cause. I believe the real issue is mental health related which has to be addressed first prior to trying to provide housing. The fact that he turned down cash just shows that mentally he is just not there.
