How Kenyans Can Access Overseas Treatment Under SHA

Kenya has introduced a new programme that allows eligible patients to receive specialised medical treatment abroad with financial support from the Social Health Authority (SHA).

The initiative, announced by SHA Chief Executive Officer Mercy Mwangangi, is intended to reduce the financial strain on families facing complex health conditions. It also aims to expand access to advanced medical procedures that are not widely available within the country.

Under the scheme, qualifying patients can receive up to Sh500,000 per year to cover treatment costs in approved international hospitals. Rather than relying on a fixed list of facilities, SHA has adopted a rolling accreditation system.

This approach allows additional hospitals to join the programme once they meet the required international standards, giving patients access to a broader range of options over time. Hospital selection follows a strict process.

Kenyan regulators work with diplomatic missions and the hospitals to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and specialised care standards. Facilities already approved include centres in Turkey, India, and Saudi Arabia, known for their expertise in areas such as oncology and complex surgery.

For many patients, the programme marks a significant change. The cost of seeking treatment abroad has often been beyond reach, limiting access to necessary care.

By providing financial support and establishing verified partnerships, SHA aims to make overseas treatment more accessible, particularly for patients with serious conditions requiring advanced interventions.

SHA has indicated that more hospitals will be added as the programme develops. Patients are encouraged to follow official guidance and consult healthcare providers to understand eligibility requirements and referral procedures.
