DCI Takes Over Investigation Into Killing of Gospel Singer Rachel Wandeto
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over investigations into the killing of gospel musician Rachel Wandeto, who died after being set on fire in Mwiki, Kasarani.
Wandeto was attacked on 16 May while walking home along 11th Street near Obama Road. According to police reports, three men approached her, poured a flammable substance on her, and set her alight before fleeing the scene. She was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital with burns covering about 75 percent of her body and died two days later despite treatment.
The DCI said its Homicide Directorate is leading the investigation and is working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack. In a statement, the agency said detectives were working to identify and arrest everyone involved in planning and carrying out the crime.
Authorities appealed to members of the public to provide any information that could assist the investigation. The DCI urged anyone with relevant details to report to the nearest police station or use its anonymous toll-free hotline, 0800 722 203, or WhatsApp line, 0709 570 000.
Some observers have linked the attack to Wandeto’s political views, particularly her public support for President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election campaign. She had also reportedly tattooed his name on her body, a decision that attracted criticism online and in public discussions.
President Ruto condemned the killing and said those responsible would face justice regardless of their political connections. He described Wandeto as a hardworking and promising young woman.
Wandeto was known within Kenya’s gospel music industry for her uplifting songs and public expression of faith. Her death has deeply affected fellow musicians, supporters, and members of the wider gospel community.
The DCI extended condolences to her family and said investigations would be conducted thoroughly and without bias. The agency also condemned violence and intolerance in all forms.
