Why Mercy Tarus Is Trending Across Kenyan Social Media

Mercy Tarus was reported safe on Sunday after concerns about her welfare spread online following an extended period of silence on her social media accounts.

Public concern grew throughout the day as users across Kenyan social media platforms questioned Tarus' whereabouts and expressed fears for her safety. The speculation prompted responses from individuals who said they had recently been in contact with the activist.

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission commissioner Roselyn Akombe appeared to reassure the public with a brief message on X, writing: “Keep thriving, Mercy!” Many users interpreted the post as confirmation that Tarus was well.

Social commentator Nerema Wako later said he had spoken directly with Tarus. In a post shared online, he wrote: “I just spoke to Tarus. She is fine,” seeking to address rumours circulating on social media.

The discussion soon shifted from concerns about Tarus' wellbeing to broader questions about online behaviour. Wako criticised what he described as a hostile digital environment, arguing that public figures, particularly young women, often face misinformation, harassment and intrusive scrutiny.

He said Tarus was not required to provide regular updates about her personal life because of her public profile. Wako also argued that a period of silence should not automatically be interpreted as a sign of danger, adding that information would likely have emerged through family members or close associates if there had been a serious concern.

Questions about Tarus' welfare first gained prominence after social media users began sharing messages asking whether she was safe. Among those seeking clarification was Bakhita Esther, who publicly raised concerns about the activist's wellbeing.

Tarus became widely known in 2023 during the controversy surrounding the overseas education programme linked to Uasin Gishu County. The initiative promised students opportunities to study in Finland and Canada and attracted substantial payments from families seeking international education placements.

Her national profile grew after a widely circulated video showed her confronting senior county officials during a public forum. In an emotional address, she challenged Governor Jonathan Bii, Deputy Governor John Barorot and Senator Jackson Mandago over the collapse of the programme despite families having paid significant sums for overseas study opportunities.

The confrontation resonated with many Kenyans who viewed Tarus as a prominent voice for affected students and parents seeking accountability. Her advocacy helped maintain public focus on demands for answers from those involved in managing the programme.

The matter remains under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. Investigators have previously stated that the trust fund established for the overseas education initiative received hundreds of millions of shillings from participating families.
