Gachagua Meets Jimi Wanjigi at Wamunyoro for Political Talks
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua met businessman and Safina Party leader Jimi Wanjigi at his Wamunyoro residence in Nairobi on Wednesday to discuss what he described as Kenya's "liberation agenda" and plans for the country's next administration.
In a statement after the meeting, Gachagua said the discussions focused on gathering views from different leaders as part of ongoing political consultations. He praised Wanjigi's experience in government formation, saying he had gained valuable insights from the businessman.
"The liberation cause of our country and the formation of the 6th Administration are so critical that we must get views from all," he said.
The meeting comes as Gachagua continues a 45-day period of consultations announced earlier in June, during which he suspended public rallies. He said the decision was intended to allow structured discussions at Wamunyoro following the High Court's decision to uphold his impeachment.
According to Gachagua, his political strategy has been guided by a 60-member advisory caucus made up of elders, professionals, clergy and young people. He said the group recently recommended shifting opposition efforts from public rallies to targeted consultations and negotiations.
Gachagua said the advisory team had identified the selection of a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election as its main priority. He added that unity among opposition parties is essential if they are to mount a strong challenge.
He said he has been tasked with consulting community leaders, political figures and opinion shapers across the country to build consensus around one opposition candidate. His meeting with Wanjigi forms part of those efforts to expand engagement with potential allies.
