Omanyala Misses Diamond League Final for Second Straight Year

Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala has ended his 2026 season early after a stress fracture in his left heel ruled him out of the Diamond League final in Brussels and the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest.

The injury occurred weeks before the Commonwealth Games and has prevented Omanyala from completing a season in which he had returned to strong form.

It is the second consecutive year that Omanyala has missed the Diamond League final. In 2025, he withdrew from the Zurich edition because of hip and pelvic problems.

Despite the latest setback, Omanyala said he was proud of his achievements this season. He finished third in the Diamond League standings and secured direct qualification for the inaugural Ultimate Championship.

His return to form was marked by five consecutive sub-10-second performances, ending a 20-month period without breaking the 10-second barrier. His reunion with coach Duncan Ayiemba played an important role in his improvement.

Omanyala won the Kip Keino Classic in April in 9.96 seconds before producing strong performances in Shanghai and Gaborone. However, his season also included slower times in Rome and Paris, followed by an early exit at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 30-year-old has recorded 23 sub-10-second performances since running an African record of 9.77 seconds at the Kip Keino Classic in 2021. That mark remains the African record.

Omanyala is among several leading Kenyan athletes who have withdrawn from the season-ending competitions because of health concerns. Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon and world 800m champion Lilian Odira have also pulled out of the concluding events.

Omanyala will now turn his attention to recovery and preparation for the 2027 season.
