Wicknell Chivayo: The Extraordinary Rise of Zimbabwe’s Controversial Businessman

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has died in a helicopter crash, ending the life of one of the country’s most prominent and controversial entrepreneurs.

Chivayo died on September 30 when the helicopter carrying him, his wife Lucy Muteke and four other people crashed at Kudenga Farm in Marondera. His death

has brought renewed focus to a career that took him from modest beginnings to major business ventures, political connections and regional prominence.

Chivayo was born in Gandami, Chikomba, and often spoke about the effect of losing his father in a road accident when he was 10. The loss placed additional responsibilities on him and shaped his outlook from an early age.

After leaving school in the mid-1990s, he worked as a wages clerk for a bus company. His early career was a long way from the wealth and influence he would later acquire.

By the late 1990s, Chivayo had moved into business. He began by trading mobile phones and SIM cards from a small office in Harare. The venture provided the foundation for a business career that later expanded into infrastructure and energy.

Through his company, Intratrek Zimbabwe, Chivayo became involved in several major energy projects, including proposed solar, hydroelectric and thermal power developments. His involvement in government-linked projects increased his profile in Zimbabwe's business sector and brought him closer to political circles.

Chivayo was also associated with figures within the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) and people close to President Emmerson Mnangagwa. His business activities and political relationships became an important part of his public profile.

His lifestyle further increased his visibility. Chivayo regularly posted images of luxury vehicles, designer clothing and expensive purchases on social media. Supporters viewed his wealth as evidence of entrepreneurial success, while critics questioned the sources of his fortune and the links between business, politics and government contracts.

His career was also marked by legal disputes and allegations involving fraud and financial misconduct. Several cases ended in acquittals or were dismissed, while Chivayo maintained that his wealth had been acquired legitimately. He attributed his success to years of business activity, risk-taking and recovering from earlier setbacks.

Chivayo also developed a public reputation as a philanthropist. He provided financial support to sporting initiatives, particularly football, and offered rewards and incentives to Zimbabwe's national team during major tournaments. These contributions earned him support from sections of the public.

His influence later extended beyond Zimbabwe. In Kenya, he became widely known for his publicised friendship with President William Ruto. His name also emerged in discussions about major infrastructure projects, including reports linking one of his companies to a consortium associated with a proposed expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Kenyan authorities denied the claims.

The episode nevertheless reflected the extent to which Chivayo's business interests and political relationships had acquired regional significance. His network included contacts with political and business figures in East, Southern and West Africa.

His activities reflected the close links that can exist between major infrastructure and energy projects, government interests and private business across Africa. Chivayo became a prominent figure in this environment, with his commercial activities frequently intersecting with political networks and public attention.

His death has now brought that career to an abrupt end. The helicopter crash at Kudenga Farm also claimed the lives of the other people on board, including his wife.

Chivayo leaves behind a record marked by rapid business growth, political connections, legal disputes, philanthropy and an extravagant public image.
