Kenya Airways (KQ) is edging closer to nonstop flights to the United States following recent inspection of facilities by American officials.
Last month, officials from the US security department met Kenya Aviation Authority to ascertain that all the safety measures are in place ahead of the inaugural direct flight to New York later this year.
Officials from Transportation Security Administration (TSA) had a session with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) and gave Kenya a clean bill of health.
“Officials from TSA were here to check our compliance in regard to Category 1 status and they were impressed with the measures that have been put in place,” KCAA Director General Gilbert Kibe said.
Kenya Airports Authority said it is waiting for TSA to grant Jomo Kenyatta International Airport the Last Point of Departure (LPD) status. This is after it conducted corrective measures including documentation of the processes at the airport, security perimeter and access control measures as recommended by TSA.
The LPD status will grant Kenya Airways and any other airline cleared by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly directly to the US from Nairobi.
