Migori Governor Okoth Obado to Spend Second Night in Police Cells

Migori Governor Okoth Obado has been presented in court following his arrest in Nairobi on Wednesday afternoon.

Governor Obado was arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations over eight firearms found in his Nairobi and Migori homes during a raid by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday.

He will spend the second night at Gigiri Police Station after Kibera Chief Magistrate Joyce Gandani ordered he be detained until Friday when the court will give a ruling on his release.

The prosecution is seeking to have Obado remanded for 15 days to allow them complete investigations.

“We are asking for 15 days to allow the officers (including ballistics) to travel to his rural home to thoroughly investigate. We will need time to also find out if the firearms were used in any crimes which might lead to other charges,” the prosecution says.

“We need time to go through firearms data to find out rightful owners of the firearms… We need time to find if there are probable suspects, to record statements of witnesses, to go through phone data of probable suspects,” adds the prosecution.

Through lawyer Rojers Sagana, Obado says the guns are not subject of dispute because they are licensed.

The Governor is also fighting to clear his name in a case where he's charged with the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno, who was his girlfriend. He is out on bail.

Mkristo Obado akiondolewa jela, bila shaka ataua tena! Mwacheni akae jela ili Wakristo wenzake waogope kufanya kitendo kama alichofanya.
