Former Ruaraka OCS Nahashon Mutua Handed Death Sentence for Killing Inmate

Former Ruaraka OCS Nahashon Mutua has been handed a death sentence for killing an inmate six years ago.

In a ruling on Thursday, High Court's Lady Justice Stella Mutuku said that the prosecution proved its case against Mutua.

“The Prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt that the police caused the deceased suffering while in cells which caused his death,” Justice Mutuku ruled.

On December 13th, 2018 Mutua was found guilty of killing Martin Koome in Ruaraka police cells, with the High Court ruling that the element of malice aforethought had been proven.

Mutua had denied the charges saying that he was on duty when he received information that the inmate had been injured.

He told the court he is the one who issued orders for the inmate to be taken to hospital for treatment.

The prosecution, however, told the judge that OCS Mutua repeatedly hit Koome with a rod and forcefully immersed his head in a bucket of water for close to 30 minutes.

Mutua, the prosecution said, went ahead to lock him up in the cell despite sustaining serious injuries.

Koome, 36, passed away on December 20th, 2013 while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
