213,000 Kenyans Viewed Moi's Body, Speaker Justin Muturi Says

Over 200,000 Kenyans viewed the body of former president Daniel Arap Moi at Parliament buildings, where it lay in state for three days from Saturday to Monday.

The public viewing ended on Monday at 6 pm with National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi disclosing that a total of 213,000 Kenyans paid their last respects to the former president. Speaker Muturi regretted that the viewing was closed before all people who lined up got a chance to pay their last respects to Kenya’s second president.

“As at 5.35 pm today, it has been recorded that 213,000 Kenyans had the opportunity to pay their last respects to the retired former president Daniel Arap Moi. Out of these, 72,500 viewed the body today,” Muturi said during a special sitting of Parliament on Monday.

On Monday, the exercise was extended for one hour before the remains were taken back to Lee Funeral Home ahead of Tuesday’s memorial service at Nyayo National Stadium.

"The time of viewing the body by the public has been extended to 6 pm ...that is the reason why we have this sitting," Muturi added.

ODM leader Raila Odinga, his wiper counterpart Kalonzo Musyoka and all MPs paid their last respects to Moi on Monday. Moi, who died at the Nairobi Hospital last Tuesday, will be laid to rest in a state burial at his home in Kabarak, Nakuru County on Wednesday.

At least 10 heads of state and several foreign dignitaries are expected to attend, Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho said.
