Senator Millicent Omanga Slams President Uhuru After He Locks Down Five Counties

Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga has slammed President Kenyatta for failing to provide measures to support residents of the five counties placed under partial lockdown.
Omanga says it was “immoral” for the president to order a cessation of movement into and out of the counties of Nairobi, Nakuru, Kiambu, Machakos, and Kajiado without giving directions on how affected residents would be cushioned.
She averred that the move is an indication that President Kenyatta does not care about the well-being of those who will be affected by the lockdown rules.
“The president slapped Kenyans with lockdown but failed to accompany it with relief measures. This is unbelievably immoral,” Omanga said through Twitter.
Kenyatta said the decision to lock down the One Zoned Area comprising Nairobi, Nakuru, Kiambu, Machakos, and Kajiado was due to a spike in COVID-19 infections, noting that the five counties account for 70 percent of the country’s total caseload.
“…These counties are individually and collectively declared a disease-infected area. There shall be a cessation of all movement by road, rail, or air into and out of the disease-infected areas,” said Uhuru.
Residents of the One Zoned Area can move freely within the five counties but are not allowed to leave.
Uhuru further suspended the operations of bars and restaurants and banned all public gatherings and in-person meetings in the five counties until further notice. The nationwide curfew in the five counties will run between 8 pm to 4 am daily.

These lockdowns are necessary but the senator makes a valid argument. President did not provide support measures or directives for these affected residents. They depend so much on movement of goods and services across counties especially Nairobi. Restricting movement in and out Nairobi hurts the economy and the people. Everything in Kenya revolving around what happens in Nairobi. Problem with centralizing so much in one city.

She might be right but details are missing. I believe essential things like farm produce, and essential supplies continue. If not then all supermarkets would be protesting. The big winners are traffic police forcefully robbing drivers to pass
