President Kenyatta has lifted the cessation of movement into and out of the one-zoned area comprising the counties of Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Machakos, and Kajiado.
Curfew hours in the five counties that were previously declared as covid-infected areas have also been reviewed to begin at 10 pm and end at 4 am.
Speaking during Labor Day celebrations at State House, Nairobi on Saturday, the president said the decision to ease restrictions was as a result of a decline in COVID-19 infections in the area.
“After one month of lockdown, Covid-19 caseload within the zoned area has come down by 72%. In other areas of the Republic, the Covid caseload fell by 89% in Mombasa and 90% in Busia between March and April,” Kenyatta remarked.
Kenyatta further directed the resumption of in-person and congregational worship across the country but under strict guidelines issued by the Inter-Faith Council and Ministry of Health.
“…the attending congregation is capped to one-third of the capacity of the place of worship,” said Kenyatta.
Bars and restaurants have also been allowed to operate until 7 pm, with strict observance of COVID-19 protocols.
In addition, Kenyatta ordered all hospitals and medical facilities to limit the number of visitors to one per patient per day.
The ban on political gatherings will remain in place until further notice.
President Kenyatta asked Kenyans to continue taking personal responsibility in the fight against the pandemic.
