Suspect Charged with Defrauding an MPesa Agent of Sh87,000

A man was on Friday arraigned in a Nairobi court for allegedly defrauding an MPesa agent of over Sh87,000.
Geoffrey Mugini appeared before resident magistrate William Tullel of Kibera law courts where he pleaded not guilty to theft charges.
He allegedly conned Ann Nyawira of Sh87,091 in Nairobi’s Kawangware estate by pretending he needed assistance to reverse an MPesa transaction.
The accused is said to have arrived at the victim’s MPesa shop while on a phone call and requested Nyawira to speak to the caller to assist him to reverse an erroneous transaction he had made on the phone.
The caller then instructed Nyawira to dial some numbers from her phone and Sh87,091 was transferred from her phone to Mugini’s in three different transactions.
When the MPesa attendant realized she had been defrauded, she sought the help of the area chief who alerted the police, leading to the arrest of Mugini.
Mugini is accused of committing the offense jointly with others, who are still at large.

three different transactions later is when she realized she was being defrauded? did the other person on the phone perhaps identify themselves as safaricom customer care or did they lie to her about fleecing safaricom's mpesa only for her to realize she was the one getting fleeced three transactions later..because if indeed she is smart enough to own a Mpesa joint she is smart enough to recognize game.
