Good evening. It's 6 o'clock this evening on Friday, the thirtieth of October, and here is your evening edition.
Coming up.
Woman's body recovered from Eastleigh rubble as fifteen remain missing.
Russia agrees to stop recruiting Kenyans into its armed forces.
Hellen Obiri chases a historic third New York City Marathon crown.
Those stories, and more, in the next few minutes.
Turning to diaspora news, jealousy is pushing Kenyan immigrants in the United States to cut ties with fellow countrymen. Community leaders say personal grudges, workplace rivalries and domestic disputes now trigger anonymous tips to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Many now hide their homes, workplaces and legal papers even from close acquaintances. Some citizens leverage their status over undocumented partners in marital rows, reporting them to agents instead of using family courts. Community worker James Mungai says staying away means nobody ever learns your status or workplace.
Staying with the diaspora, prosecutors have urged a Nairobi court to send Brian Kiprop Kiplagat to London to face eight charges, including murdering his girlfriend Marianne Kilonzi. Prosecutor Duncan Ondimu argued local courts should only decide whether surrender conditions are met, not guilt. Kiplagat fled Britain after the killing and was arrested at the Namanga border in June as he tried to cross into Tanzania, sixteen months later, carrying suspect documents. Kilonzi, a forty-three-year-old Citibank vice president, was beaten to death at home in January twenty twenty-five.
Turning to immigration news, a United States court has blocked reopening the Diversity Visa lottery, known as the Green Card draw, leaving African applicants uncertain about the twenty twenty-seven entry. The ruling was reported by Business Insider Africa today. Kenya is historically eligible and registers millions of entrants every year. Congress created the programme under the Immigration Act of nineteen ninety, granting up to fifty-five thousand visas each year to countries with low immigration, chosen by random draw, with no country above seven per cent.
Also on immigration, Home Office data shows foreign workers turning away from the UK. In the year to September twenty twenty-six, main Skilled Worker visa applications fell forty-three per cent to twenty-six thousand four hundred, and Health and Care Worker applications collapsed sixty-three per cent to seven thousand five hundred, ninety-five per cent below their peak. The minimum salary has risen to forty-one thousand seven hundred pounds, sponsorship costs have jumped thirty-two per cent, and English rules now demand level B two.
Turning to Kenya, forecasters say heavy rains between October and December could cut off transport routes. The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre sees a ninety per cent probability of enhanced rainfall in north-eastern Kenya, with central areas exceeding four hundred millimetres. The World Health Organisation says floods earlier this year killed one hundred and twenty-two people and affected over forty-two thousand in twenty-seven counties, cutting the Sultan Hamud Bridge and Mombasa Road. Emergency responder Victor Odera says crises multiply just as roads become hardest to reach.
Also in Kenya, Nairobi motorists face heavy delays tomorrow as the Orange Democratic Movement rallies tens of thousands at Jacaranda Grounds. The gathering closes a month of mourning called Mwezi wa Baba for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Organisers expect over one hundred thousand delegates from all eighty-five wards. Nairobi chairman George Aladwa says convoys will use Mombasa Road, the Southern Bypass, Jogoo Road, Thika Road and Outer Ring Road. Leaders will also map out party strategy for the twenty twenty-seven election.
Staying in Kenya, Russia has agreed to stop recruiting Kenyans into its armed forces. President William Ruto announced the deal on Friday at the Kremlin after meeting President Vladimir Putin, and a Defence Attaché will now handle returns and compensation claims. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi told senators three hundred and fifty-four Kenyans are linked to the war, with eighty-four killed or missing. Journalists for Justice separately estimate eight hundred and forty-one were recruited, with at least seventy-six confirmed dead.
Meanwhile in Kenya, opposition tensions spilled into the open at the opening of the Linda Mwananchi Movement offices in Lavington. When Eugene Wamalwa appeared to declare Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna the opposition's presidential candidate for twenty twenty-seven, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka objected, saying joint consultations on the thirteenth of November must come first, as supporters heckled him with chants of Sifuna. Sifuna also named his proposed party team, including Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi as chair, and promised to cut five hundred billion shillings from the budget.
Also from Kenya, search teams in Eastleigh have recovered the body of a woman from the basement of a collapsed building, on day eight of the operation along Yusuf Haji Avenue, with at least fifteen people still missing. Governor Johnson Sakaja is threatening legal action against Babu Owino over posts linking him to the approvals, which the MP refuses to apologise for. Hundreds of Kamukunji traders have protested eviction notices, and fraud detectives are questioning county officials and an owner.
Turning to world news, Kenyan nationals are among those charged in the United States over an alleged one hundred and thirty million dollar scheme that used stolen identities to claim federal student aid. That is according to a BBC Africa investigation into what is called the ghost student scam, where aid claims were filed for enrolments that existed only on paper, anchored to stolen names, birth dates and Social Security numbers. No count of the Kenyan defendants has been given.
In business news, French shipping group CMA CGM has launched its first dedicated block train between the Port of Mombasa and the Nairobi-Embakasi Inland Container Depot. Each departure hauls one hundred and eight containers on fifty-four wagons, moving in a single formation without being split, a design meant to cut delays and handling damage. Cargo cleared at Embakasi spares shippers the trip to the coast, and faster evacuation of boxes should ease congestion at East Africa's busiest harbour.
Staying with business, nearly fifteen international firms want to build factories or distribution hubs in Kenya. Kenya National Chamber of Commerce president Doctor Erick Rutto says the interest emerged at the Big Five Construct exhibition in Nairobi, which drew more than one hundred and fifty exhibitors from over twenty-five countries. Kenya faces a housing deficit of two million units, with two hundred and fifty thousand needed each year, and some manufacturers say seventy per cent of their output already serves affordable housing.
