Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu Drops Her Re-election Bid
Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has stepped down from the race to defend her seat in the August 9th general elections.
The announcement was made by the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition party presidential candidate Raila Odinga at a campaign rally in Mutha town in Kitui County on Wednesday.
Odinga, who is giving his fifth stab at the presidency, said Ngilu will be assigned other roles in the national government if the coalition wins the forthcoming elections.
"You will decide between former Governor Julius Malombe and former Senator David Musila who will be your governor. I want to take mama [Ngilu] to Nairobi," Odinga said.
Ngilu’s exit from the race now leaves former Kitui Governor Julius Malombe (Wiper Democratic Movement), former Kitui Senator David Musila (Jubilee Party), and former Nairobi deputy governor Jonathan Mueke (United Democratic Alliance) to battle out for the seat.
Ngilu won the seat on a Nark Party ticket in 2017 after defeating incumbent Malombe of Wiper and Musila, who vied as an independent candidate. She garnered 162,768 votes which translated to 47.41 percent of the vote.
