MP Samuel Arama Fined Sh1.5 Million for Attempting to Grab a Land Valued at Sh60 Million

Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama has been fined Sh1,560,000 after he was found guilty of conspiring to grab a parcel of land valued at Sh60 million.
Arama, who is defending his seat on a Jubilee Party ticket, will spend six months in jail if he fails to pay the fine.
In a ruling on Thursday, the Anti-Corruption Court in Nairobi said the MP and his co-accused persons are first offenders.
Arama’s co-accused, including former Nakuru Lands Registrar Charles Birundu, John Mwaura, and Daniel Nyantika were slapped with a fine of Sh1,040,000 each or face up to six months in jail in default.
Kennedy Onkoba, the lawyer who acted on the transaction, will serve the same period in prison or pay a fine of Sh560,000.
The court ruled that all the accused persons did not directly benefit from the transaction and that the title deed of the land in question was returned to the complainant.
The accused in their mitigation pleaded with the court to consider a non-custodial sentence.
"I have considered the mitigation as guided by the policy guidelines...they are not been condemned...the property in question was restored and therefore never benefited," the court ruled.
