Kenya Gov’t Declares July 11th a Public Holiday to Mark Idd-ul-Adha

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has declared July 11th a public holiday.

Through a gazette notice on Friday, Matiang'i stated that Monday would be a holiday to mark Idd-ul-Adha, also known as the Feast of the Sacrifice.

"IT IS notified for general information that in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 3 as read with section 2 (2) of the Public Holidays Act (Cap. 110), the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government declares Monday, 11th July, 2022 a public holiday marking Idd–ul –Adha," reads the notice.

Idd–ul –Adha is the second and the biggest Idd celebration within Islam and is often considered holier than Idd-ul-Fitr.

This day honors the willingness of the Islamic Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to Allah’s command. It also marks the end of Hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca.

During the festival, Muslims around the world gather to mark one of the holiest days in the religious calendar.

Idd-ul-Adha takes place on the 10th day of the third month after Ramadhan, according to Islamic teaching.
