Ruto Fronts Wetang'ula and Kingi for National Assembly and Senate Speaker Slots

President-elect William Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza Alliance has settled on Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula and former Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi for the National Assembly and Senate speaker seats respectively.

The decision was reached following a meeting held on Wednesday at the deputy president’s official residence in Karen.

The coalition also picked Uasin Gishu Woman Representative-elect Gladys Shollei for the National Assembly Deputy Speaker post and Meru Senator-elect Kathuri Murungi for the Senate Deputy Speaker seat.

The meeting attended by newly elected members of the National Assembly and Senate affiliated to Kenya Kwanza was convened by Ruto.

The election for both speakers shall take place on Thursday once the newly elected MPs are sworn-in at the 13th Parliament's first sitting.

To clinch the National Assembly Speaker seat in the first round of voting, one must garner at least 233 votes out of 349. If there will be no round one winner, the first two contestants will face off in a run-off that requires a simple majority to win.

For the Senate Speaker seat, a candidate is required to secure 45 votes from the 67 Senators to win in round one. If none achieves the threshold, the one who receives a simple majority in the second-round wins.
