President Ruto Nominates Japhet Koome as the Next Inspector-General of Police

President Ruto has nominated Japheth Koome Nchebere as the next Inspector-General of Police

Koome, a former Nairobi County Police Commander, currently serves as the Commandant of the National Police Service College, Kiganjo.

If approved by Parliament, Koome will replace Hillary Mutyambai, who has opted to proceed on terminal leave ahead of the expiration of his term in March 2023.

While naming his Cabinet on Tuesday, President Ruto announced that Mutyambai had requested to proceed on terminal leave.

“After discussions with Mutyambai and in consideration of his service to the nation and his health, I have accepted that he will proceed on terminal leave in the six months that he has on his contract,” Ruto stated.

Mutyambai, who is battling ill health, had six months left on his term as Inspector General of Police.

Last month, he was admitted to the Aga Khan Hospital’s High Dependence Unit after falling sick but his health has since stabilized.
