Three people have been confirmed dead after a seven-storey unfinished building collapsed at Seasons area in Kasarani, Nairobi, on Tuesday afternoon.
Two of the victims were found dead in the rubble and one died while receiving medical attention, according to the General Manager for Research, Training, and Capacity Building at the National Construction Authority (NCA) Maurice Akech.
Akech said 22 people have so far been rescued from the collapsed building that was under construction, with six of them suffering serious injuries.
As rescue operations continue, the number of people still trapped underneath the debris remains unknown.
Addressing the media at the scene on Wednesday, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said the developer of the building lacked permit, ignored warnings, and went ahead with construction. The governor said the county government will file legal charges against the developer and contractor.
“This building had an enforcement notice since last year. NCA was here on Tuesday and closed the site but the contractor just went on. The developer did not get any permit from the county, he should be charged with murder,” Sakaja said.
He further requested the National Construction Authority (NCA) to submit a report of all buildings in the county that have been designated for cease orders.
