Governor Mwangaza Wants Meru County Assembly Dissolved Following Her Impeachment

Governor Kawira Mwangaza has called for the dissolution of the Meru County Assembly following her impeachment on Tuesday.

This comes after a section of Meru residents asked Mwangaza to endorse their bid to have the county government dissolved over her irreconcilable differences with the MCAs.

The residents, who are collecting signatures to have the assembly dissolved, said the county government has failed to perform its constitutional mandate due to intense wrangling between the governor and MCAs in the last three months.

“Dissolving the county assembly may not be honorary but it is necessary. Let’s see what will unfold in the near future,” Mwangaza said in a tweet.

On Wednesday, 67 out of 69 MCAs voted in support of Mwangaza's impeachment motion, which was tabled by Abogeta West Ward Representative Dennis Kiogora.

All the MCAs present in the assembly voted unanimously to remove her from office on grounds of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and gross violation of the Constitution and county laws.

Kiagu MCA Simon Kiambi and his Nkomo counterpart John Kithinji Ethaiba did not participate in the voting exercise since they were absent.

The governor is accused of nepotism, illegal appointments, unlawful dismissals, usurpation of constitutional and statutory functions, incitement, bullying, vilification and misleading campaigns against other leaders.

She was also accused of forced entry into the assembly and mobilizing unlawful riots against MCAs, violation of public finance management laws, and misconduct relating to the nomination of CECs.

Mwangaza, through her lawyer Elias Mutuma, turned down the invitation to defend herself before the assembly arguing that the motion is in contempt of court.

Mwangaza's fate now lies with the Senate which is expected to uphold or overturn the impeachment.

Amendment is needed to have councilors elect governors instead of IEBC wasting a lot of money in their elections. But why does poor Kenya have these 47 expensive useless counties in the first place? What else have these useless units achieved in 12 years other than looting/corruption?Why do Kenyans experiment on anything including education, food, government setup etc?
