Suspect Linked to Shooting of NHIF Employee Lilian Waithera in Nairobi CBD Arrested

A 38-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting of National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) employee Lilian Waithera along Kaunda street in Nairobi CBD.

The suspect, a licensed firearm holder, was apprehended by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday afternoon, Citizen TV reports.

Waithera was walking close to her workmate having left her place of work in Upper Hill when she suddenly collapsed and died at about 5pm on February 13th.

She was initially thought to have died of natural causes until a postmortem revealed that she was shot from an elevated angle with the bullet penetrating her body through the collarbone before stopping in the lungs. She died five minutes after the shooting.

A DCI source told Citizen TV that evidence shows the suspect was near the scene of Waithera’s murder. During his arrest, his firearm was confiscated, and will be undergoing a ballistic examination.

Detectives are investigating the circumstances under which Waithera was shot dead by a suspected sniper and the motive of her assassination.
