KRA Debt Officer Arrested for Demanding a Sh50,000 Bribe

A debt officer attached to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has been arrested for soliciting a Sh50,000 bribe.

Ismail Ahmed Mire, who is stationed at KRA offices at JKUAT towers, is alleged to have demanded the money from a complainant in order to amend a wrongly accrued VAT tax penalty.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) commenced investigations into the case after the complainant reported the matter to the anti-graft agency on March 8th.

EACC detectives accompanied the complainant to JKUAT towers on March 15th where he met Ahmed and gave him a partial bribe of Sh40,000 after a brief conversation.

The suspect was arrested immediately after receiving the bribe and was taken to the Integrity Centre Police Station where he was processed and released on cash bail pending the conclusion of investigations into the incident.

EACC said the KRA official was found in possession of the said sum after a quick body search.
