Activist Boniface Mwangi Sues David Ndii for Defamation

Activist Boniface Mwangi has filed a defamation case against the chairperson of the President's Council of Economic Advisors David Ndii.

Ndii had claimed that Mwangi was paid by William Ruto to support the Linda Katiba initiative which opposed the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI). Mwangi deems Ndii's accusation as unjustifiable, stating that it paints him as a hypocrite without any reasonable justification. Ndii had made these claims on Twitter in response to queries about Linda Katiba's financial backing. The renowned activist says that the social media audience mocked and reviled him due to these unfounded allegations.

In the tweet, the economist claimed that Linda Katiba was formed by himself and Martha Karua with Ruto's support when he was Deputy President. Mr Mwangi, who laments over hypocrisy allegations, claims that the post suggested that he was motivated by financial gain in his efforts to defend the constitution through the Linda Katiba initiative. According to the activist, In November 2020, he formed the initiative together with Jerotich Seii, former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana, Wanjeri Nderu, Martha Karua, and a group of others. Mwangi says that the movement was aimed at challenging the unconstitutional alteration of the constitution through the BBI process.

He lauds that the campaign was successful as the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court declared the proposed amendments unconstitutional. According to court documents, the Defendant's statements were false and malicious, damaging Plaintiff's reputation and standing. Mr Mwangi also claims that Dr Ndii's post is a severe slander that has caused him significant harm, distress, and embarrassment within his family, friends, acquaintances, peers, and the community.
