Kiambu Deputy OCS Arrested Over Bribery Allegations

A Deputy OCS from Kiambu County and a police constable have been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on charges of soliciting bribes from the public.

The accused individuals purportedly asked for a payment of Sh50,000 as a "motivation fee" in exchange for releasing a person's car despite there being a legal court order in place. Upon retrieving the demanded sum at Kiambu Police Station, the suspects were caught and have since been processed at EACC Integrity Centre Police Station and Kilimani police station pending further enforcement actions.

In other news, a Kenya Revenue Authority agent who had sought out a bribe amounting to Sh2 million in 2022 has been taken into custody after being a wanted target for the last ten months. Obura, an auctioneer at Keysyan Auctioneers, has been arrested by the EACC detectives for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Sh2 million. He had proposed to waive a tax arrears amount from a private company's debts to KRA.

Obura refused to appear for either plea-taking or the Commission's summons which prompted his disappearance in December 2022. He has been released on a bond of Sh1 million or Sh500,000 cash bail whilst his case will have its hearing mentioned on October 5, 2023.

In a separate incident, the CEO of Athi Water Works Development Authority Michael Thuita is currently being questioned by detectives from the EACC regarding procurement activity at the organization. He has been taken to the EACC headquarters for processing. Collaborative searches have been conducted at the residences of the CEO to help further a continuing investigation involving tender allocations for dam construction projects. The EACC had suggested the CEO be discontinued. However, Water CS Alice Wahome has disregarded the suspension recommendation of the EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak saying it could potentially impact the probe.
