Tana River Woman Swims Across Dangerous River to Give Birth

In a remarkable tale of courage amidst adversity, Sadia Mahamud undertook a daring journey through treacherous waters to a hospital in Tana River County.
There, Sadia proudly welcomed her precious gift, Mohammed Bilal, into the world. Today signifies the fourth day since his birth, a celebration of happiness and appreciation. As Sadia reminisces about the journey that led to this extraordinary accomplishment, she vividly remembers the initial feeling of unease. Despite having a week remaining according to her clinic appointment, she started feeling ill on a Friday morning.
Considering it a typical event, she continued with her regular schedule. In an attempt to find comfort, she visited the camp's conventional masseuse and found temporary relief. But as the night darkened and rain showered, Sadia was suddenly gripped by a severe muscle spasm, forcing her to quickly rise. In a rush of urgency, she managed to break free from her tent, understanding that immediate medical help was necessary.
Unfazed by the overflowing Galole, she paid no heed to the flooding. As her aunt and friend caught up with her, they embarked on a perilous journey across the unpredictable seasonal river, which had tragically claimed two lives in less than two weeks.
Her aunt, accompanied by two other women, joined her, forming a chain as they navigated through the swiftly moving river, their feet wriggling beneath the water's surface. They found brief respite amidst the water, but as she prepared to exit, the pain resurfaced, forcing her back into the depths.
With the aid of the men, they swiftly reached her side. She sat in the shallowest part of the water, her neck alone exposed. Letting out a piercing scream, Sadia, a woman in labor, and Eshah Ismail, a traditional midwife, embarked on a lengthy journey to the hospital. With no means of transportation available, they had no choice but to walk several kilometers.
After a challenging journey they arrived at Madogo Health Centre where Sadia triumphantly welcomed her newborn son. Nevertheless, their weariness prevented them from going back home that day, leading them to decide to stay at the center. Ismail expressed gratitude for the fortunate outcome, as both mother and child narrowly avoided a fatal tragedy on their dangerous trip to the hospital. Overcoming the flooded river proved to be a formidable task, especially for the heavily pregnant Sadia, who bravely confronted the powerful current.
Contemplating the dangerous history of the region, Ismail expresses his appreciation that a higher power had safeguarded them on that fateful occasion. With the aim of averting future challenges, Ismail and Sadia have a desire for the authorities to build a bridge, facilitating smoother transportation to and from Baraka village. The present circumstances in the villages of Tana River are grave, as torrential downpours have left numerous individuals trapped amidst the deluge.
