Kenya Government to Formulate Strategies to Stop Harassment of Foreigners at Airports

Tourism Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa has announced new measures to encourage more foreign weddings in Kenya, especially during the festive season in December

Stakeholders in the tourism industry have voiced their reservations to the ministry regarding the government's recent focus on acquiring customs taxes at airports. In response, the PS underscores the ministry's dedication to delivering a hassle-free experience for tourists at airports while still recognizing customs duty regulations. With the influx of visitors expected in December, including 200 Indians coming for weddings, stakeholders hope for a smooth entry process at the airports.

During a rebranding ceremony for PrideInn Hotels, Resorts, and Camps in Mombasa earlier this week, Ololtuaa revealed that the ministry is working together with the Attorney General, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and the Department of Immigration to formulate plans for enhancing wedding tourism in Kenya. This initiative comes in response to the recent debate surrounding the seizure of a Ksh300,000 wedding gown by KRA at JKIA in the past few weeks. The incident involved an American man who possessed a dress that surpassed the Ksh75,425 (USD 500) limit for duty-free items.

The PS also touched upon the topic of boosting the tourism sector through the introduction of additional initiatives like eVisa applications. The goal, according to the PS, is to attract approximately 5.5 million tourists to Kenya by 2027. He clarifies that once these areas are identified, they will be developed and refurbished to attract tourists.

Hasnain Noorani, Managing Director of PrideInn, has announced the hotel's plan to expand into new markets and capitalize on untapped business opportunities. The rebranding will include customization of areas with growth potential in order to maximize its potential revenue.

We are dealing with two issues here.1 harassment and 2.custom tax.The two appear to be mutually inclusive here. This should not be the case.Harassment involves staff abusing authority. We can eliminate harassment by retraining ,or worse firing the offenders. As for custom tax,the government should just do away with it, like Singapore,or Switzerland,or bury it in touristic expenses. For travelers, there is already a limit imposed on what you can carry anyway,or bring into the country. Find another way to increase revenue.Be creative, dont dwell on this well worn out path.

@maxixelly, things like this usually happen when one put his Mogotio ngombes in place to do a job they are not well trained to do! This is why the airport roof is deliberately leaking to show how bad things are in Kenya.

I recently got badly harassed at that airport and my clothes were stolen to include my under wears! I lost my verything including a leather jacket that I was wearing going home! Those stupid idiotic airport agents said they wanted to check the manufacturer’s label, forced me to take it out my body, took it to some back office and that was the last time I say my jacket! I am very pissed off!

I went through the same situation when I was leaving the country! Those thugs don’t understand that a Swahili speaking black man like me can be a US citizen. I will soon denounce my birth rights to be a citizen for of that goddam country. Who wants to be associated with a shithole freaking country where nothing works for the common people!?

I won’t plan to return to Kenya while Ruto is still alive!

@ Khaemba, I would say your experience is more of the norm than the exception nowdays. A lot of folks entering the country have similar complaints. It is this kind of treatment that makes diaspora not want to make frequent visits,or just change nationality, and forget about Kenya. With the monthly dollars in millions, diaspora send to Kenya you would think that they deserve some kind of "preferential" treatmen. The least of which is not being harassed as you carry goodies for Kenyans' benefit in to the country. That's not asking too much.Is it?

I can tell that every body has had enough of this directionless Ruto government, and especially when you see @juju a hard core Ruto supporter lacking words to express his anger to what is happening in Kenya. Did you get harassed at the JKIA?

@Njoki, no, I haven’t been to the shìthole, but I’m aware of what’s going on, I can be a darling at one point, but I’m objective! I only stand with what is just and legal. Obviously, this regime is losing on many fronts and seems to be oblivious of what is happening, already drunk with God and Power! Sometimes, as a president, you have to be able to break out of the bubble to see the reality! Presidents are usually misled by those within the bubble if they can’t figure out how to see beyond the bubble, and more so in an extremely corrupt country like our shìthole!

Now, what about a date to bury the hatchet 🪓

Don’t worry @juju boy! You will say more of that Blar, Blar when Racheal Ruto gets hold of your daughters and teacher them how to make false prophesies about El Mino rains and black oily water in the Reservoir..! You told us to vote for Ruto but now you are hany up on Blar Blar when shit has hit the ceiling fan! You ain’t seen it yet because when Ruto is done stealing, there will be no Kenya left for your girls to go visit! But, I feel your pain!

When you start singling out issues ...ati talking about a wedding dress...weddings...you are just one pile of you know what. Don't just talk 'tourists'...fellow Kenyans are being abused in those same airports. Or you can as well build airports for kenyans and others for tourists and another one for foreigners... KRA staff are running amok with power. FIRE the idiots. OPEN hotlines that work. NAME tag the staff loud and clear. Yaani Kenyans have no common sense? Is DISCRETION rocket science?

Keflex (not verified)     Wed, 11/29/2023 @ 01:07am

Oh! That’s the solution?
Let’s continue harassing the Kenyan citizens coming through our airports, but leave the foreigners alone??
“Stupid is like stupid does!”

Uda govt strategy of taxing everything is to blame. U shouldn't tax things that won't be sold. Double taxation is wrong.

Juju (not verified)     Fri, 12/01/2023 @ 01:06am

When you put hyenas and dumb as a rock 🪨 sloths 🦥 in positions of power, you get a mongrel corrupt government that lacks integrity and substance!!!

Mbwana (not verified)     Fri, 12/01/2023 @ 02:09am

Obviously harassment comes from the custom duty guys, where the PS John Olultaa needs to focus more towards the home coming disporians should have a fair tax bracket to their belongings.
