How KCSE 2023 Class Fared

The release of the 2023 Form Four national exam results reveal that a total of 1,216 students achieved an average grade of A.

In an announcement made by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu yesterday, it was revealed that out of the total number of candidates, only a minuscule 0.14 per cent comprised the top performers. Specifically, 825 males and 391 females emerged as the highest achievers. Furthermore, a total of 201,133 candidates, which accounts for 22.27 per cent of the entire group, met the requirements for university admission, indicating a rise from the previous year's figures of 173,345 students. The data also unveiled that 18,078 candidates secured a grade of B+, with 10,370 males and 7,708 females achieving this distinction.

In addition, a total of 36,728 students attained a B plain grade, while a B- was earned by 59,514 students and a C+ by 78,343 students. However, there was a noticeable decrease in performance in the lower-grade brackets, with 19,960 female students and 28,214 male students achieving a Grade E. Likewise, the D- category included 79,432 female students and 86,429 male students. The Grade D category comprised 79,612 female students and 75,664 male students, while a D+ was secured by 66,032 female students and 58,974 male students.

Mr Machogu has directed the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to align its admission criteria with the new grading system. He has emphasized the importance of informing candidates about this change. The revised grading system will assess applicants based on Mathematics and a language of their choosing, such as English, Kiswahili, or Kenyan Sign Language. Additionally, KUCCPS will consider the top five subjects achieved by each candidate during the placement process.

With this innovative strategy, a larger pool of KCSE candidates will have the chance to pursue their preferred fields of study at universities and colleges. The introduction of this grading modification aims to broaden students' prospects, allowing them to meet the requirements for entrance into degree, diploma, and certificate programs offered by colleges and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres.
