Mt Kenya MPs Face Voter Backlash Following Gachagua's Removal

Political turbulence has gripped Mt Kenya region following the recent removal of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The impeachment has since deepened rifts between parliamentarians and their constituents. The fallout has sparked intense debate over political loyalty and accountability in the region. Gachagua recently announced ongoing consultations regarding the region's political future. These discussions, which involve religious leaders, business figures, and professionals, are reportedly proceeding smoothly, with plans to announce strategic decisions in the near future. The political landscape has become particularly contentious in Mathira constituency, where MP Eric Wamumbi, a vocal critic of Gachagua, faces a recall initiative from constituents.

Local voter Samuel Ngari expresses optimism about gathering the required 30 percent voter support for the recall, citing allegations of constituency fund mismanagement and claims of improper conduct during the impeachment proceedings. Wamumbi has countered these challenges by highlighting his development initiatives and accusing Gachagua's faction of attempting to force coffee farmers into a questionable Sh300 million purchase of the Central Coffee miller. The political instability has extended to neighbouring jurisdictions, with Nyandarua Governor Moses Kiarie confronting an impeachment motion over alleged administrative misconduct.

While the motion's success remains uncertain, its proponents led by Mirangine Ward Representative Samuel Mathu remain confident in securing adequate support. Tensions have also emerged within parliamentary ranks. Kipiriri MP Wanjiku Muhia has publicly denounced alleged intimidation from Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung'wah over her government criticism. These concerns are echoed by Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru who suggests systematic efforts to suppress dissenting voices in the region. The political dynamics have placed certain leaders in precarious positions, notably Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, who chairs the Budget and Appropriations Committee.

His conspicuous absence from Gachagua's impeachment proceedings has prompted speculation about potential repercussions, including possible removal from his committee leadership role. Amid these developments, Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung'wah has attempted to redirect focus toward developmental priorities, emphasizing the government's commitment to serving all citizens regardless of political affiliation. However, Catholic bishops have expressed growing concern about the political discord's potential to fragment both the populace and governmental unity, calling for leadership that prioritizes national cohesion over factional interests.
