Kalonzo Announces Major Rebranding for Wiper Party

The Wiper Party, a prominent fixture in Kenya's opposition landscape, is poised for a significant transformation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has revealed plans for an upcoming name change as part of a broader rebranding strategy. The announcement marks a crucial juncture in the party's 14-year history under the Wiper banner, signalling a shift toward broader national appeal. Kalonzo, speaking on Thursday, characterised the impending rebrand as "earth-shaking," promising that the new name would encapsulate the movement's expanded aspirations.

This rebranding initiative is strategically aligned with ongoing efforts to forge a robust coalition capable of challenging President William Ruto’s administration in the upcoming election. Sources within the party indicate that shedding the Wiper name aims to dispel the perception that the party primarily represents the Ukambani region, broadening its appeal to a nationwide audience.

Since its inception, the Wiper Party has undergone notable evolution. Originally established as ODM-Kenya following a split with Raila Odinga in 2007, the party later rebranded to Wiper Democratic Party-Kenya. While Odinga retained the ODM identity, Kalonzo has consistently sought to expand his political influence. Despite serving as Odinga's running mate in both the 2013 and 2017 elections, Kalonzo has not pursued the presidency since his initial attempt in 2007. He supported Odinga’s bid in the 2022 elections, a move brokered by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The party's rebranding effort coincides with broader initiatives within the opposition to consolidate support and establish a formidable coalition. Kalonzo hints at the coalition’s imminent formation, asserting, “From next week, the coalition is forming. For the avoidance of doubt, safari hii ni ukombozi Kenya (this is the liberation journey for sure).”

His remarks underscore a renewed commitment to uniting the opposition to mount a serious challenge in 2027. However, tensions are surfacing within the opposition, particularly concerning the potential candidacy of Dr. Fred Matiang’i, a former Interior Cabinet Secretary. Matiang’i is expected to host political leaders in Kisii this weekend, reportedly mobilising support in anticipation of a formal announcement later this year. The Jubilee Party’s endorsement of Matiang’i has raised concerns among some opposition leaders, including Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, a close ally of Kalonzo.

Maanzo has questioned former President Kenyatta’s ability to successfully position Matiang’i as a presidential contender, given past difficulties in securing victory for Odinga. “If Uhuru was unable to make Raila, who was more popular, president in the last election, how will he make Matiang’i president when he is now retired?” Maanzo questioned, highlighting doubts over Kenyatta’s influence.

This is not the first time the Wiper Party has considered a name change. In 2021, the party removed the word “Kenya” from its official title, though it retained its iconic umbrella symbol. In December 2024, Kalonzo reiterated his intention to rebrand, with allies indicating that the process had reached an advanced stage. The party’s upcoming name change is viewed as a strategic move to inject renewed energy into its political agenda.

The absence of a unified opposition has been a notable characteristic of Kenya’s political landscape since the formation of the broad-based government. Disgruntled Azimio coalition members, including the Wiper Party, have reluctantly assumed opposition roles. DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa emphasises the critical importance of unity, stating, “The opposition is determined to unite for a greater cause,” highlighting the need for a cohesive front.
