NCIC Calls Out Gachagua Over Post-Election Violence Comments

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has issued a formal warning to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, cautioning him against what it deems divisive rhetoric ahead of the 2027 general election. 

The commission, chaired by Samuel Kobia, expresses grave concerns over Gachagua's recent statements referencing the 2007/2008 post-election violence, urging political leaders to exercise restraint and responsibility in their public pronouncements. Gachagua, who recently formed the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has faced increasing scrutiny following a controversial interview. 

In the interview, he suggested that potential electoral irregularities in 2027 could trigger unrest surpassing the scale of the 2007 crisis, an episode in which over 1,000 people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced after a disputed election between Raila Odinga and Mwai Kibaki. Gachagua's characterization of this period as akin to a "Christmas party" has been widely condemned by various stakeholders. 

The NCIC's warning underscores its commitment to holding political figures accountable for statements that could undermine national unity. The commission emphasizes that such rhetoric trivializes the suffering endured by Kenyans during the 2007-2008 post-election violence and presents a tangible threat to national stability in the run-up to the next election cycle.

The commission reaffirms its vigilance in monitoring political discourse, especially with the emergence of new political parties and alliances. It has issued a strong caution against the trend of ethnic-based politics, which the NCIC considers a violation of Kenya's constitutional principles. While acknowledging that political formations are a fundamental aspect of democratic participation, the commission emphasizes that parties structured along ethnic lines can exacerbate existing tensions and fuel division.

Gachagua has defended his remarks, maintaining that he was merely voicing concerns expressed by ordinary citizens regarding electoral integrity, which he believes should be addressed to ensure a fair democratic process. However, the NCIC had previously cautioned him in March over potentially inflammatory comments regarding the judiciary. 

At that time, Gachagua claimed there was an orchestrated effort within the Kenya Kwanza coalition to remove Chief Justice Martha Koome, which prompted a formal warning from the NCIC under the National Cohesion and Integration Act. The NCIC has reiterated its call for responsible speech among leaders, highlighting the potential consequences of inflammatory statements in inciting unrest and deepening societal divisions. 

Describing the current political climate as increasingly "toxic," the NCIC pledges to work alongside law enforcement agencies to ensure accountability for those who engage in reckless rhetoric.  In a separate but equally significant development, Gachagua has publicly mourned the tragic death of Nyandarua Catholic priest Father John Maina Ndegwa, who served at Igwamiti Parish. Father Ndegwa was found unconscious by the roadside with severe injuries and pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital.

Gachagua describes Father Ndegwa as a personal confidant and devoted servant of faith, recalling their conversations and noting the priest's unwavering commitment to truth and his willingness to speak on matters of national importance. Just two weeks prior to his death, Ndegwa had hosted Gachagua at his silver jubilee celebration, where he reportedly delivered a powerful sermon.

Investigations into the priest's murder are currently underway, with authorities suspecting foul play. 

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has suggested that Ndegwa may have been targeted over financial disputes, with reports indicating that he had been trailed by individuals demanding a share of donation funds. Although the priest had voiced concerns over his safety, no formal complaint had been filed before his death. Gachagua has called for swift justice, urging security agencies to expedite investigations and bring those responsible to book. His message of condolence extends to the Catholic Church and the broader community affected by the tragic loss.
