DCI Investigates Possible Mass Grave in Lake Nakuru National Park

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched a probe into allegations of a possible mass grave inside Lake Nakuru National Park, following the reported abduction of a local fisherman by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers.

The investigation follows a court order issued by Senior Resident Magistrate Cynthia Muhoro, granting detectives access to the park to conduct a thorough search and, if necessary, exhume human remains. The inquiry centres on the disappearance of Brian Odhiambo, who was allegedly arrested by KWS officers on 18 January for suspected illegal fishing and has not been seen since.

Six KWS rangers, including Senior Sergeant Francis Wachira, have been charged in connection with Odhiambo’s disappearance. The case has drawn renewed scrutiny of previous incidents involving confrontations between park authorities and local residents, some of which allegedly resulted in injuries and deaths.

DCI officers from the Homicide Department, led by Mr Martin Nyuguto, have begun preliminary investigations at the site. However, the family’s legal representative, Mr Abuya Mogendi, has criticised delays in executing the court order, citing concerns over lost evidence. He also alleged that detectives were denied access to the park due to an upcoming VIP visit, raising concerns about possible interference.

“The DCI Homicide Department moved to court last Monday and obtained an order. Detectives are allowed to carry out an extensive search and possible exhumation of bodies that may have been buried in the park. Lake Nakuru is a crime scene,” said Mr Mogendi.

Several civil society organisations have called for a swift and impartial investigation. Hussein Khalid, Director of Vocal Africa, said the case is a critical test of Kenya’s commitment to the rule of law and accountability in public institutions.

The court order allowing the search remains valid until January 2026, providing a limited but crucial window for investigators. The recent discovery of another fisherman’s body in the lake has added urgency to the case.
