Gachagua: Why Kalonzo Deserves to Be President
Rigathi Gachagua has endorsed Kalonzo Musyoka as the United Opposition’s frontrunner for the 2027 presidential election, positioning the Wiper Party leader as the key challenger to President William Ruto.
In recent public statements, Gachagua has highlighted Kalonzo's political experience, loyalty, and ability to unite regional voting blocs, particularly in Ukambani and Mt Kenya. Gachagua has described Kalonzo as a reliable figure, emphasizing his commitment to agreements and his suitability for the presidency.
This endorsement is significant given Gachagua’s own standing in the opposition and is seen as an effort to rally support for Kalonzo after years of unsuccessful presidential campaigns. Kalonzo's long-standing influence in Ukambani politics, particularly his ability to deliver the region’s vote despite setbacks, further strengthens his candidacy.
His alliance with Raila Odinga in 2022, despite being passed over for the running mate position, bolstered his image as a dependable political figure. Analysts suggest that a Kalonzo-Gachagua partnership could harness the combined strength of Mt Kenya’s seven to eight million voters and Ukambani’s three to four million, making it a formidable electoral bloc.
However, the path to consensus within the United Opposition remains challenging. Political scientist Gasper Odhiambo notes several hurdles, including the need to manage nominations, secure campaign financing, and mobilise younger voters whose turnout remains low. New movements, such as Kenya Moja, which include splinter groups from both government and opposition, further complicate the political landscape.
Despite these obstacles, Gachagua has maintained a positive outlook, stressing the importance of regional alliances in securing victory. Speaking in Murang’a, he underscored the significance of combining strong regional support bases. Musyoka has welcomed the endorsement, commending Gachagua’s ability to clarify the political situation.
Other opposition leaders have responded cautiously. DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa described discussions over the presidential ticket as a natural part of the coalition’s internal dynamics. Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i downplayed concerns about discord, suggesting that the consensus-building process, though difficult, was necessary.
Governor George Natembeya called for a transparent and inclusive process in selecting the flagbearer, advocating for an “organic candidate” that would resonate with a broad base of voters.
